Thanksgiving service for ex-air gunner Doug Sample

THE Yorkshire Air Museum is tomorrow holding a thanksgiving service in honour of the president of the museum’s Canada branch, Doug Sample, who died last year.
A Canadian maple tree will be planted and dedicated in his memory, and a memorial plaque placed near to the Memorial Garden will be unveiled by members of his family. The service takes place tomorrow at 2pm in the Museum Chapel. Doug’s daughters Donna and Beverley, and granddaughters, Sara and Jill, are travelling over from Canada to attend the service, as is Major Terry Ledrew from the Canadian High Commission.
Museum director Ian Reed said: “Doug, himself a former air gunner with 415 Squadron, based at Eastmoor near Sutton-on-the- Forest, York, did much to raise awareness of and honour his countrymen who fought so willingly, with Canada being the first nation to join Britain’s side in the fight against Nazi oppression.
“Doug was actively involved in the museum from about 1988, establishing the Canada fundraising branch, which has contributed so greatly to the museum’s development.”
