Memorial to Sqn Ldr Roger Bushell & S/Lt Bernard Scheidhauer unveiled – Ramstein AB

A small, but well attended, ceremony was held yesterday afternoon (1st July), just off the L369 and approximately 1km from the end of the main runways at Ramstein AB, to commemorate and place a memorial to “Great” Escapers Sqn Ldr Roger Bushell (Big X) and his escape partner S/Lt Bernard Scheidhauer FAFL.

It was a joint ceremony presided over by officers from the RAF and French Air Force. The Guard of Honour was provided by officers of the RAF, FAF and German Air Force.

Members of the Bushell & Scheidhauer families placed wreaths on the memorial after it was unveiled by Bushell’s Niece and Scheidhauer’s Great Niece.

The memorial is approximately 1.4 km from the actual spot where it is thought the two airmen were murdered by the Gestapo on March 28th 1944 after being on the run for 5 days.
