After the remake was released in the UK my dad said to one of the girls at work “my son is in that movie”….
This was answered with “Good grief! How old is your son??”

It then became apparent the girl didn’t know about the remake, only the original….lol

The ‘Memphis Belle’ was the first war film I ever saw with the characters represented by actors actually the age of those that served and died, and not John Wayne or others who where clearly in their late thirties or fourties.
For me it was a refreshing departure from the old hacknied(sp) war films ‘of old’, where mature adults played the parts of youths.

Just my two pennies worth.

One shot has always puzzled me. Towards the end when they are waiting for the aircraft to return, all the groundcrew are looking one way and the bombers appear from behind them! I know American navigation is allegedly not very good but I can’t imagine it’s 180 degrees out.

You better ask the Director Michael Caton-Jones… the two versions of the script I still have give no clue…. it’s about on a par with the ‘stars’ flying a B-17 with the control-locks clearly in place!

Rlangham, Pure lightening and Daz daz man, that makes four of us! 🙂 This film literally changed my life and everything I have done since, after watching it as a 10 year old in 1993… It may bit a bit corny in places and not quite historically accurate but its introduced many a new generation to the trials and tribulations that the ‘greatest generation’ endured. For that, its earned its place in the story it represents…

I was waiting to hear the ‘wheee… whoosh’ as a Lightning sprang to life in the background… (yes, I know the film was made after the Lightnings had departed – just humour me!)

Col Robert K Morgan

Seems like another life time since the Memphis Belle film came out in the early 90’s…. while taking a few liberities with history..it was neat to see some of the flying scenes. I lived very close to the late Col Morgan and he was such a fine man. Went to several airshows and talked with him and several other members of the original crew. Col Morgan was most modest about this his time in the 91st BG. He said he hoped the Wyler film was a tribute to all who flew in the Eighth and other combat theathers in the war. Many have forgotten after his time in the Eighth .. he flew many missions in the new B-29 in the pacific ! I do remember him coming back to Duxford in 94 for the 50th anniversary and he again meet Queen Elizabeth ! Fine man who thought much of your country and its people. Like many of the RAF bomber crews he knew he was most lucky to survive his 25 mission and come home. He was always willing to talk or sign a print or book… he is most missed here in the Carolinas. He now rest in the lovely western North Carolina mountians near his home town of Asheville, North Carolina !

All Hail the 91st BG ..The ragged irregulars !

I wouldn’t call it “dire”…but it’s more than a bit corny.

But still, it brought together 5 REAL bombers in the UK…
(something that the new Dam Busters certainly won’t do )
and anything to help tell the story of WWII vets to a younger generation can’t be all bad..even if it is American.:D
