im looking at joining up and looking for peoples experiences, been on the phone today and someone from the local college is calling me back to discuss it some more but it seems interesting to say the least

i think the only thing that will let me down is the fitness, although at the moment im not sure on minimum levels

I would not look on it as a way to ‘see the world’!! These days ships spend very little time in port and the opportunities for trips ashore are very limited!! Even when I was at sea (he said sounding a little bit too much like Uncle Albert!!), what I mostly saw were tanker terminals and they all look the same!!!

Don’t run to Sea to escape some Bird. It’ll just make the worries float not sink.

My best mate spends Summer on an exploration Geology thingy and Winter bringing garbage known as product from China. The latter pays more money believe it or not, but the former is his love.
It’s a hard life, long time at Sea and, unless you are Officer material, the money’s crap.
But do go abroad, not only to see the world and experience stuff yadda yadda yadda……but because the UK is finished.
It will be a decade before we recover from this mess.

My son is currently at maritime college. He is doing it via sponsorship from a company and is going off to sea for the first time next month-a 4 month trip. He is enjoying the course, says its not academically too difficult but a huge amount of information to learn and remember. Having previously tried the university life and hated it, this seems to be suiting him just fine.

Can’t give you any first hand advice except to say that if you feel you want to do something, do it? If you don’t you’ll probably regret it and if you do and you don’t like it then you can leave, if you do like it then you’ve found yourself a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. Just avoid the pirates!!! Good luck!

Scott you know my daughter’s your age ?
When she was 18 her Dad’s old aunt died and left her a little bit of money. It said in the Will she wasn’t to have it until she was 21 ( I don’t think the aunt trusted Vic’s boyfriend at the time not to try to get his hands on it ),but the solicitor said it would be OK for her to have it.
She’d already passed her driving test,so there was enough for a car,and she spent the rest on travel.
Leaving her elderly Mum behind :diablo: she went to Australia, the USA and Canada, and says it was absolutely the best thing she’s ever done.
Travelling is so expensive,so what better way to see the world than to get a job that pays you to do it ? And do it now, because before you know it you’ll be festooned around with a wife, children, mortgage, pets and so on which means you’ll have to stay put for a very long time.
One question though, how are you with sea-sickness ?

Hey I dont know anything about it, but if you feel your fitness isnt up to standard maybe buy some weights and and do some jogging, sit ups, press ups etc. I recently decided I want to become a police officer and so i’ve been working on my fitness.

I was an Engineer Cadet with CP Ships, did about another 6 years after that before going into the drilling industry.
Had a great time, thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommended but obviously you will need to be prepared to not have a ‘normal’ home life.
