Can anyone tell me why the rocker shafts rotate? Were they used as accessory drives at the other end or something?
As David said, they are indeed for accessory drives, but the shafts themselves don`t rotate, the gears run on bronze bushes. The rocker shafts are keyed into the rear pedestal.
It`s a question that comes up very often.

Yes.
The term ‘bank’ refers to the cylinder banks that the cam assembly services.

Hi how can i tell which cam is the left or right bank ( side ) and which end are the gears, at the front ( prop end ) or the blower end?
Regards Norman
Your third photo has them in the correct order; the top one is b-bank, then a-bank. The gears are at the supercharger end.

Hi thanks for that, how would i find the year the engine was made ? were the Mk 24 engines ever fitted to the Hurricane, Spitfire or Mosquito.
Regards Norman
The Rolls Royce Heritage trust can advise on age and perhaps some history of the batch of engines this engine came from.
There is a lot of information on the web on what engines types were installed on different aircraft.

Can anyone tell me why the rocker shafts rotate? Were they used as accessory drives at the other end or something?
There are several accessory drives on the rear ends of the rocker shafts; two for air compressors, and a hydraulic pump. Also on the B-bank, an engine speed take off in the centre of the rocker cover itself.
