You can buy them on ebay, Griffons as well!; the Merlin must be one of the most continuously “in service” engines of all time, they were still manufactured into the ’50’s. something like 160000 were made, (not counting Meteors, some parts of which can be used).

There is a supply and as you say it’s finite; I couldn’t say where the supply is coming from but currently there seem to be enough to supply the ‘new’ aircraft coming onto the scene and to make the manufacture of engines ‘from scratch’ uneconomic.
However as the number of aircraft increases, as seems to be the current trend, that may not continue to be the case.

I believe they managed to manufacture a few from scratch during the war! 😀
The question is could a Merlin be manufactured from scratch cheaper than you could buy one today and would a ‘new’ Merlin be permitted to fly on an aircraft?
There was a thread about it quite recently.
My question was more about the supply of the engines. Assuming you can’t get on the phone to RR, and ask them to send
you one. Or buy one on Ebay
So where do they now come from ? I would have imagined there was a finite supply, even reconditioned/rebuilt ones.

LOL! I’ve been thinking about it (Buying a copy that is, not your birthday!) but I’m not sure I really want to sit and watch an hour of camcorder footage of a Merlin chugging along at low revs on a trailer…do I?!!!

Great site, thanks Peter-I’ve seen pictures of this baby before, but not the whole site. Okay, who’ll be first to buy the video and just sit there watching it, drooling?!!!:p

Great site Peter, interesting to note that your Merlin XX is from a Beaufighter ll an unloved aircraft by it’s pilots when compared to the radial version.
