I received a spam email from craigslist/paypal earlier. Something to do with it being in my financial interests to visit a particular web address. Needless to say, I didn’t go there.

This Merlin is the same one that was for sale in Haverhill. Gets around a bit doesn’t it. Nice to see the blocks are an inch clear of the crankcase too,,,,,,,

I believe that if you reply, they will send you pics of such an engine, then take the money and disappear into the night.
I used to get a German guy trying to sell me all sorts of things that he didn’t own – including an Ar196 from Bulgaria at one point. A quick email to the curator of the museum confirmed that it wasn’t for sale!

I thought about taking my post and this thread down, but it seems to be a salutary warning, so if you all agree I will leave it up
It never hurts to be reminded about these kind of sites where the seller is allowed complete anonymity, obviously a bad idea.
There is a difference between the dodgy emails we all get and seeing a Curtiss OX-5 that you may have spent 20 years searching for for a special project for example.
I’m sure any one of us could be taken in by the right scam.
The people who operate sites such as Craigslist seem to think it is sufficient to simply post warnings to check the authenticity of the adverts on there instead of making the advertisers responsible. EBay may not be perfect, but I think it is a world apart from this one.
They never used to let you put adverts in the local paper without proof of identity…enough said.

K, btw there is a Curtis OX5 on there too see
This is also a repeat of a very similar described engine that was for sale a good few months ago.Unless the man has more than one so described (he is very lucky).

SCAM ALERT BE VERY CAREFULL.
I and a few others have received messages purporting to come from either Ebay or Paypal using our email address BUT NOT our paypal or ebay ID. Stating we have received payment for goods we have sold on Ebay one being a post man pat vehicle th eother being an Aircraft Engine. It then has links to view the transaction.
DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS ETC. These are scams to do nothing but give unwanted visitors on your computer and also to give other people your ebay and Paypal information ,passwords and your account details. !!!!!
I looked at it twice and very nearly pressed a button then realised I dont have anything currently for sale !!!!!!.
The Nasties are about again.
Also that engine is not as described it has been opened up and stripped of anything of use,if you look at the pictures you can see this has happened.

Definitely a scam, that Merlin isn’t up for sale!
I wouldn’t touch Craigslist with a barge pole.

What is the going rate for a Restorable Merlin these days? it would seem cheap to me at $3500 or thereabouts.

This is the same area as an add for a torando cockpit part that in fact was sold a long time ago – be very careful of scams there.
By: Bruce - 12th May 2014 at 20:07
Careful, there have been a number of scams revolving around these.
