Merlin Mk3 in WWII markings

Hi Gents

I’m assuming this thread will be multi forum information given that it is a mix of old & new – so I apologise if this is the wrong place?

However, from a purely “historic aviation” point of view . . .

I expect some of you might be interested to know that, for a (VERY!) short period of time, a Merlin Mk3 is currently wearing special markings to celebrate the 95th Anniversary of No 78 (Bomber) Sqn RAF.

The WWII & slightly beyond “EY” markings of 78 Sqn have been included, the first time a 78 Sqn aircraft has carried these marking since the late 1940’s (last worn by Dakota Mk IV’s in Egypt & the Med)

Finally, given that the Sqn crest features a twin tailed Tiger, (based on the fact that the Sqn crest was presented when 78 Sqn were operating the twin tailed, Napier Tiger engined Whitley’s) the odd Tiger stripe or three appears!

I will try to upload images ASAP

Once again, apologies if this thread is in the wrong forum

Kind Rgds

Like it, reminds me of the puma that had a set of Bollox and a big willy on the underside…….. flew for quite a while before it was discovered….. similar one Sqn doing a display, think it was 33 Sqn.. as they banked over the crowd they proudly displayed on the underside “Fly 230” 😀 had been added when they were not looking….. 😀

Some people seem to think a moral boosting paintscheme is a waste of money, even if it was paid for by the RAF, which it wasn’t as explained… tell me why we run 4 separate “parliaments” for a country the size of ours…… something that used to be done by one Parliament without 4 times the waste, buildings, staffing etc……. want to save money, look there first and stop bashing the forces who are fighting wars whilst the assets to do it are being p*ssed down the drain by the Government..

GOOD EFFORT 78 sqn. I’m sure that those who haven’t served in the military will at least understand the need to encourage amoung it’s personnel a sense of esprit de corps and team ethos. Particularly when many of them have, and continue to put their lives, and in some cases future health, in danger for the sake of US.

This paint scheme is one way to achieve this and forms a fitting, yet cost effective backdrop for 78’s 95th anniversary dinner. (which will be paid for by those attending, before any more ill-informed comments are posted ).

On the other side of the coin, tax-payers are entitled to see their money wisely spent. I can assure you that a good number of RAF celebration paint schemes in the past have never seen the light of day due to budget-conscious command-level management directives. A squadron boss may have to risk a one way interview or worse if he goes against such clear instructions. See Roger Topp’s recent article about painting the Arrows, Black. So be thankful for any paint scheme varieties that are out there.

Quite frankly I think its a disgusting waste of tax payers money when the military is supposed to be hard up and facing further cuts to make savings.

Mmmmmm…….

I am also disgusted by the negative responses, first a few facts.
The scheme is indeed decals and was only ever intended for the function celabrating the sqn, 95th anniversary.
2nd It is not a waste of tax payers money as the scheme was paid for and applied by 78 sqn persons
3rd it was never intended to be a WW2 scheme the tiger stripes represent the fact the sqn is a tiger sqn and the WW2 markings represent an aircraft the sqn lost in WW2 which they have a memorial to outside the hanger. So it is a fitting tribute to the fallen of 78sqn.

If you don’t like the scheme thats your opinion which your entitled to, but without the facts you can look really petty.

Suggest you read the aeromodellers thread on UKAR as already mentioned.
http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=38923
Some background about the effort for what was a squadron event for past and present members.
Given the limited time for a scheme I think it was clever that the torn sections indicate that below the current Merlin scheme was the historic scheme of the black bomber finish so that also reflects the sentiment of the squadron that behind the current operations it is never forgotten that many went before on operations never too return.

Realistically its probably all vinyl and can be removed easily.

I’m amazed by some of the negative responses to this, I’d be surprised if it cost a fortune and it marks a significant part of squadron and RAF history. This is the air force marking its history and paying its respects to members past.

I doubt that it will be a massive waste of money as i bet the Station spray bay would have welcomed some work although I can’t help but thinking that it looks PANTS 😮 Hardly a WW2 Bomber theme.

Lost opportunity me thinks.

Tony

I’ve put them all up

If at a later time you manage it, I’ll remove both these posts.

Try resizing them with a free program like PIXresizer http://pixresizer.en.softonic.com/
I have to resize my attachment images to 500 X 375 to allow the forum to accept uploaded images.
If the format is not right either it will reject, jpeg is king! the above prog will allow you to save images in whatever format you choose.

Having major issues trying to upload the pictures. All attempts so far (now into double figures!) have failed as the system rejects the images – but doesn’t give a reason

I will keep trying – or send them to someone else to upload them for me!

Thanks Tony! Looking forward to seeing them. Benson keeps a Merlin Facebook page and if you have an account I’m sure they be happy to see them and publicize them as well.
