Messerschmitt 109 – location sought.

Can anyone help me place the location of this photograph to assist me with a caption?

The Policemen look to have Leeds helmet plates, but I’d love to know where it is taken.

And yes, I’d noticed the back-to-front wings and odd canopy cover. Any ideas what it is from?

Nuuumannn, thank you for setting the story straight and providing a picture I have not seen , Yellow 7 at Laverton met a similar end, scrapped surrounded by Fairy Battles !

went to New Zealand and survived I believe into the 1970s, in an automotive spray shop, the trail as I know it ends there.

Actually, Brown 5 was scrapped in Christchurch shortly after the end of the war, in the late 1940s, exactly when some other Kiwi chaps who visits this forum might be able to help with. The picture above was taken in 1942 outside the Bank of New Zealand in Wellington, who used it to promote war bonds and the aircraft was initially part of the RNZAF’s Technical Training School at Rongotai, Wellington. Later the TTS moved to Nelson in the South Island where it was put on public display at the RNZAF base, with a line up of current RNZAF types for comparison. It was sent by road to RNZAF Base Wigram in Christchurch, where it was offered to the Canterbury Museum, who turned it down owing to a lack of space, or so the story goes, so the air force scrapped it. I think small components survive in the Air Force Museum. Here is a picture of it in Nelson and the same hangar today. The hangar is used by Air New Zealand regional subsidiary Air Nelson for heavy maintenance.

I have no idea which 109 was lost in transit, but it does ring some vague bells.

At the present, a mammoth captioning project is occasioning my trawl through a huge quantity of Luftwaffe crash photos, and I am looking at all the downed 109s in UK.

If something pops out, I’ll post.

The local press (In Australia) allude to a 109 lost in transit before the arrival of Yellow 7, no date for the loss is given ..for obvious reasons.
I wondered if you had the records from Avonmouth, which is where I believe they were sent from.Or perhaps lost in the fog of time.
Regards Mike
PS I got my photocopy of Brown 5 from a New Zealander whos name I sadly cannot remember.

Here you go. A marginally better quality shot. It is in my files but without any indication as to original source.

What is the ‘sunken 109’ story??

Well if you cannot sleep…why not post it…were you aware of the earlier sunken 109?

I have a slightly better quality shot of this, if you’d like me to post it?

Up far too early – and writing captions for very similar images!!

During my research on Yellow 7, I found that another 109 was being shipped to Australia, but was ‘Lost in Transit”, maybe records at your end?
The final Bf109E-4 was from 3/JG51 Wn.1653 Brown 5 ,shot down 27.11.1940 flown by Fw Wilhelm Erdniss, which went to New Zealand and survived I believe into the 1970s,
in an automotive spray shop, the trail as I know it ends there.
Here is a scan of her in Wellington.

Mike.

Yes, I thought this may be the one you mentioned. Were there other 109s down-under? I seem to think there were.

Andy very grateful for your time but I have this one, the aircraft was left on the dock for about two weeks on arrival and was ” got at”, thus it went to 1AD at Laverton for a new rudder, and a touch up
of its camouflage. Its a shame we cannot see the before and after shots.
Kind Regards Mike

This is the only photograph I have in my files. Taken in Australia. Aircraft shipped from Avonmouth docks to Australia mid-1941.

If there are crash site photos I have never seen any.

We’ve got one photo of Yellow 7 (probably from Andy’s collection) in the new Luftwaffe Crash Archive 3 which will be out next month.

Andy, Simon and I are planning a whole series of paintings based on these Battle of Britain combats so watch this space, you may well end up wanting to sponsor one of them!

Yes, of course!

Always thought the scene of this crash would make such a lovely subject for a painting.

Maybe I need to talk to Posart….!!
