Metal Storm

So, Metal Storm keeps making grandiose claims as to how its electronically initiated, stacked projectile system is going to make all other systems obsolete, but is there anything to this company other than its regular flow of press releases ? The technology would appear to have a potential CIWS application due to its high cyclic rate, but how realistic are the proposals for airborne and even personal weapon systems ? The stacking system seems to present a number of issues regarding weapon size and reloading (especially where a large number of rounds were required). Or does the lack of a traditional receiver offset weight concerns to a degree ?

Any thoughts ?

IMO the most practical application seems to be for a shoulder-fired grenade launcher. You can have several rounds instantly ready without the complexity, space and weight of an autoloader. There’s a proposal for fitting an MS barrel on top of a modified Steyr AUG – it looks neat.

The only reason there are so many press releases on this thing is that the US government bought it off us Aussies and have kept it to themselves as a new secret weapon 😉

I think the general idea is that the rounds are loaded into the barrel, and reloading involves switching an empty barrel for a full one?
