Metallic composition of 'Electron' alloy

Kind of a bizarre question, but does anyone know or know of a resource that has the metallic composition figure for the alloy ‘Electron’.
‘Electron’ may go under another trade name elsewhere but is essentially a magnesium alloy often used for engine cases (Gipsy engines are an example) and also for seat frames etc (de Hav, Percival, etc etc).
Just after the percentage values for the different metals in the alloy.

Just welding up some bits and pieces and need to identify the best rod to use.

Kind of obscure I know but someone will have an answer.

Not sure on the engine bearer use, possibly.
It makes for extremely light parts.
Have emailed the company and I’ll see what comes back, if its of use I will post it here also.
Just for info the on a number of drawings I have it is referred to as “Electron” with a C so not sure if the trade name has changed, its probably the same stuff though.

Thanks for the info, I had a feeling someone here would at least be able to point me in the right direction.

A bit of an aside, but didn’t the Germans make thier engine bearers out of Electron in WW2?

Finally…this is the puppy you need…gives the compositions of all the family of Elektron alloys produced since 1936!!!

These guys made huge amounts of castings during the war and processed huge amunts of scrap aircraft components afterwards! Good luck…its way past my bedtime

Fascinating question….I would suggest you chat to the chaps who rebuilt the Merlins that were run at Newark….they found that they had to weld new casting ‘patches’ onto the broken crankcase. They found the alloy was no longer available so made new rods from bits of old crankcase (or so I think they told me) anywhichway ask Peter at: Merlinv12.com

These guys are superbly enthusiastic and qualified and have knowledge of other engines…..hope it goes well regards Tony
