Meteor Book

Please can anyone recommend a good comprehensive book on the Meteor. I’m starting to research the FR.9 for some work I’m doing on tactical recce and would be grateful for a book which includes in its pages, a rundown on this variant: development, cameras, squadrons, overseas usage, conflict involvement etc. The bare bones will do. I can then work out from there.
Thanks.

Gloster Meteor F.1

The Philpott book is excellent as an overall history of the Meteor.

Another useful volume is the MacDonald Aircraft Monograph – Gloster Meteor by Edward Shacklady. It’s published earlier than the Philpott book.

Both books lack a little depth about the Mk I Meteors. The most comprehensive list of Meteor – V-1 kills that I have found to date was in an Air Classics magazine article – circa mid-1980’s (though being away from my references, I may be mistaken about the date of the magazine article).

In addition, there are a number of books about the early jet engines which cover the integration of engine and Meteor prototype and Mk I airframes. More on those on the weekend, when I’m home to dig through the stacks of books.

Meteor

“Meteor” by Brian Philpott is also a comprehensive book on the Meteor.

Meteor FR.9

lindoug,

The Book Gloster Meteor (Barry Jones, Crowood Aviation Series ISBN 1 86126 162 4.) has a six-page section on the Fr.9 & 10 entitled The Cameramen.
It has info on the facets of the type’s usage that you require in addition to contract numbers and leading particulars, etc.
Whilst not an extensive chapter it is, nonetheless, quite comprehensive in its coverage of the photo-jets and a good starting point for further research.

Anon.
