Meteor NF(T)14's of 2ANS

Bit of a shot in the dark here, but here goes.

I am looking for images of Meteor NF(T)14’s of 2ANS, to help with deciding the final colour scheme of WS807.

Basically, we need to go to the Jet Age Museum with 3 different Schemes, first one is No 25Sqn, second is No 60Sqn, but personally we would like to go with 2ANS, as the scheme stood out more, and we believe we have managed to get around the Day-Glo problems of previous restorations.

Any help with images, would be greatly appreciated.

NF 14s

Hi

2 ANS were based at Thorney Island prior to their amalgamation with 1 ANS at Stradishall. 1 ANS colours scheme is that depicted by the Malta Aviation Museum.

At Royton ATC we have recently restored our NF14 – WS726 – back to its original 25 Sqn Colour Scheme but would love to see photos of it with its 2 ANS colours. We had some ex- 2 ANS people visit during the refurb, please emails me and I will try and emal an image.

I’m pretty sure Dick Ward has a photo or two of Meteors in that scheme. Dunno if anyone knows where he can be contacted these days – through one of his publishers maybe?

As you probably know, most of the remaining Meteor 14s are NF(T).14s; lots of them were allocated as display airframes so they had a high ‘survival’ rate.

I have an Aviation Photo News B&W print of WS807 coded J , but it’s in the overall silver and dayglo strip scheme, unfortunately. I could try and email it to you via pm. Whether 807 ever wore the scheme you prefer, grey/green camouflage with big areas of dayglo painted on, I couldn’t say – but that scheme is certainly eye-catching.

Aaah right – the pics ISTR were taken at their home base which was Stradishall.

My father-in-law flew in Meteor 14’s & Javelin’s – he was a diff form of Nav – some weird type of Nav that wasn’t night qualified. Something like radar tech – SNCO aircrew. Well, or so he says…

I do believe him of course – he’s an intelligent chap who knows his stuff. Trained on Lincolns…

Where was 2ANS stationed?

I ask because, there are I’m sure some colour pics of Meteors from an ANS in the Crowood book. If you still live near Newbury, I’ll happily lend you my copy!

Thanks for the info TO, I will contact the chaps in due course.

Nick, 2ANS was based at Thorney Island with the 14’s until 1962.
I no longer live in Newbury, moved to Ludgershall, Wilts back in July, get to see lots of Boscombe Down movements, along with stacks of very low flying Helo’s of the RAF and AAC.

WS739 at Newark also served with 2 ANS and I know they have some images (I think mainly black & white) from that era.

It might be worth making contact with the Curator & Restoration Manager there as some new material came forward as a result of their ‘markings appeal’ for WS739 earlier this year.
