Meteor T7 to Coventry Tue July 5th

Surprised no one has picked up on this yet but the Meteor T7 should be flying from Kemble to Coventry AIRBASE on Tuesday July 5th. Dan Griffith will be piloting the aircraft and she is due to arrive at Coventry between 11 and 12. Dan will then depart later in the Meteor NF11 for a display in Belgium. AIRBASE which is not normally open on a Tuesday will be opened especially for the event and normal admission prices apply. This is of course all subject to serviceability.

Be nice to see her at Waddington – it was great to see the Hunters, Vampire and Meteor – when did we last see 2 Meteors fly together?

May. Both Martin Baker machines did a flypast at Cranwell as part of the 70th anniversary of the jet engine. The Jet Age Museum’s E28 replica was on the ground at the time (obviously!)

Not sure but it can’t be long as I have seen a picture of her on FACEBOOK in her new colours just minus outer wings for some reason

Outer wings were removed to fit in paintshop – and sprayed seperately. It was the easiest way of getting the job done and I’m told it won’t be long now before it’s back in the air again 😉

Does that make 4 Meteors flying now in the UK?

The T7 and the NF 11 and the two Martin-Baker testbeds?

I say time for a formation photo!:)

Cheers Nimrod, I thought it looked like alot of smoke for just paint burning off. Fortunately it doesn’t sound too serious..

Having been at Coventry yesterday and talked to some of the classic flight people it would seem that a gasket or seal in the area of the jetpipe has moved and allowed exhaust gasses to escape. This explains the smoke you can see in the photos and why the arrival didn’t go quite to plan. It ended up being towed in from the taxiway after shutting down with the firemen in attendance. The original plan was for it to attend RIAT next week and then go for paint but that may obviously change

According to the newsreader on the Beeb last night, the smoke was from the paint ‘cooking’ on the hot nacelle.

I share the concern about the smoke/fuel vapour as it taxies in – any comments from someone who knows?

.

And isn’t 1943 a wee bit early for the T7?

The last line of the BBC’s report reads:

“The model that will be based in Coventry was built in 1949”

Didn’t like the look of that smoke/steam coming from the jetpipe area of the port engine.

The Beeb have run features on the aircraft’s arrival both on local and national news. 🙂 Some footage, without commentary, on this link:
