If anyone is planning a trip to Lincolnshire this Summer then you might be interested in popping into the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre that is located in between RAF Waddington and Coningsby. Housed in some of the original wartime buildings on the former Lancaster airfield we have been busy over the winter refurbishing some of the exhibits. I’ve attached a few pictures (excuse the poor quality) of one of the new displays depicting each of the aircrew positions in a Lancaster.
We have built up a good team of enthusiastic volunteers and are very keen to expand the museum. We would be very grateful for any assistance locating wartime airfield equipment and Lancaster parts especially a cockpit canopy, Undercarriage and turret parts.
Many thanks to the forum members that have provided items over the years and have helped build up these displays. If it wasn’t for the Aerojumbles advertised on here then we wouldn’t have been fortunate enough to complete these displays.

Have been there twice but it was a very long time ago. Must be late 90’s. It was an great experience for me as this airfield was the first wartime airfield I ever visit in Lincolnshire and also a discovery to find out the wartime buildings. Sad about the demolished controltower. Hopefully we will visit Metherhingham this year in August. I think much is changed since my last visit. Superb display’s on the pics. I’ll tell you what..the H2S was came from my collection and found it in a shed in The Netherlands. Restore it and swop it with a friend in the UK. If I am right the Nav mock up came from a Dutch friend live in the UK. Anyway looking forward to meet and see the fantastic collection.
Cheers,
Adrian

If anyone is at a loose end this weekend then the annual Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre Wartime Weekend is being held on Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd May. BBMF Spitfire and Dakota fly pasts have been confirmed obviously weather and serviceability dependent. The Museum’s latest acquisition Dakota KG651 will be proudly on display complimented with several Allied airborne reenacting groups so provided the weather holds it will be a great Weekend event.

Being so close to Coningsby we are hoping every departing and arriving aircraft will be routing via Metheringham. It should be a great event and fingers crossed for the weather.

Just reminds me of my first ever visit to Metheringham back on 4th July 1968 … at ROC camp at Coningsby (having come by Matchless 500 from Christchurch(Hants) .
I made an evening sorty out to Waddington and Scampton, Kirton, Hemswell and others…passed Metheringham and saw G-ASIY Pa-25 Pawnee being loaded up for a spray mission.
Already interested in disused fields I also visited Coleby Grange, Digby, Bracebridge Heath, Woodhall Spa and East Kirkby that day. At that time many of these were fairly complete.
Those were the days!

Apart from the BBMF Lancaster do you have any ideas on what else is due to fly over?

Excellent museum. I saw and followed the signs while just passing by.
All those model Lancasters hanging from the ceiling, one for each loss…..
