Mew Gull G-AEKL

I have been asked by someone building a scale model of Mew Gull G-AEKL if I can help with the colour scheme, we know the colours on the top were Red and Gold but wonder if anyuone knows what the undersides would have been. I have only ever seen black and white photograps which dont help.

I am sure someone here knows and can help

Some interesting detail of G-AEKL’s colours here.

Hope it’s of use

Barry’s collected photos show two different schemes for G-AEKL !!

As a result of the Proctor rebuilds i have met a gentlemen who wishes to remain nameless until such time he reveals his project, suffice to say and adding to the East Anglian Percival restorations in hand (two Proctors and 1 x Q6) he has an advanced airworthy Mew Gull replica in his shop. We were talking colours earlier this year and yes you have guessed, it will be red and gold! Not for me to reveal more, but i do know that the fuselage is completed and the wings well advanced. Our contribution is a spare Proctor spade grip which we collected from Sweden with the Mk 3.

That’s all right then. He’s got plenty of red paint left over from his other aeroplane!! 😉

So far as i am aware this is a new project built from scratch. Google “Percival Mew Gull” pictures will show a cockpit with said spade grip. Proctors generally had a spade on the left with stick to the right, or a single spade for the pilot only.

The late Tony Woollett, who was a renowned artist and aircraft model maker, researched the schemes for his models very carefully. He specialised in inter-war civilian types. When his collection was auctioned in 1999 Christie’s produced an excellent illustrated catalogue. I attended the auction and found the aircraft models were simply stunning examples.

You may find it revealing to get hold of a copy of the catalogue, for on page 118 is a superb photo of his model of G-AEKL resplendent in burgundy and gold.

I see someone has put a picture on the web though it looks as if they’ve brightened the shot as the colours shown in the original catalogue (and what I recall of the model itself) were of a rich darker burgundy. Hope this helps.

Would this project have any connection with the one started by Tim Moore & the late John Evetts in the days of EMK Aeroplane or is it another one?

(I never realised Mew Gulls had spade grips, always assumed it to be a normal stick)

Ken

I’m sure that the under surfaces were also Red and Gold. The registration letters appear to have a thin dark outline (Black).
