Does anyone have any pictures of the Mew Gull XF when Tom Storer acquired it. I used to have copies of a number taken at the time and while he was restoring it but they have gone missing, so can you help please.
Thanks,
Ken

I think most enthusiasts are aware that a lot of new material went into EXF when she was rebuilt by Tom Storey and Martin Barraclough and no doubt even more has been incorporated during subsequent rebuilds and repairs but if the options are EXF as she is today or trying to preserve the remains as they were at Reflectaire I know which option gets my vote and undoubtedly the vote of many others who enjoy the sight and sound of her in the air.
The “new” Mew looks superb and hopefully we will see the pair of them together at some time next display season.

These pictures are great, thanks o every one. the article by Tom has 3 of the pictures I had so that’s great.
Davids Mew Gull has flown but is grounded at the moment as he had a fuel leak on the pump and is waiting for new seals. Looking forward to seeing it close up and flying. A brilliant job.
Proof that David’s Gull is a going concern! Seen here getting up to speed in the hands of Charlie Huke. (David was apologetic about the quality of the picture, but he was rather preoccupied at the time!).

G-ORDY -reading Tom’s account of the rebuild -it appears that a new fuselage and wing was built -tail feathers rebuilt and metal parts reused . Effectively that constitutes a new aircraft .
That’s the way of the World these days …
Meantime here’s a few more photos of her, two taken just after the Cape Record flight when she was displayed in Littlewoods Store in Oxford Street, another after her return from France – still in external Cape Record configuration (the long range gear had been removed at Gravesend in 1939), and the last one when she was unveiled at Old Warden in 1978.

Another Mew
With all the interest here I am surprised that one has mentioned the latest Mew Gull to fly! Its not for me to provide photos etc, the aircraft has I believe been pictured in both Flypast and Aeroplane Monthly.
I have yet to see her for real, but I know she is going to be a very special machine in the circuit next year, faithful to the original design. My interest apart from seeing another wooden Percival airborne is that even though its only a small part, we were able to supply an original spade grip which adorns the cockpit. Proctor 3 KEX arrived from Sweden with two spades fitted and a spare sitting in the luggage compartment.
Lets hope EXF and EKL can be paired at Old Warden,Duxford or anywhere for that matter in 2104 a tantalizing prospect.

Here’s Tom Storey’s account of the rebuild as published in Vintage Aircraft No.9, July 1978.

Ref post 5. Yes AA, I can confirm that there is that photo about, I have a copy of it, somewhere, but like you, despite also searching diligently, it has been done and gorn orf.

These images are fascinating, thank you so much for sharing them! It’s amazing that in the 1970’s at Reflectaire that it wasn’t just discarded, it looks like rubbish. Fascinating…

Many thanks for these fantastic pictures, they are ones I haven’t seen before. If I find mine I will post them on the forum.

I believe that quite a bit had been spirited-away by collectors by the time Tom & Martin acquired it, although they did manage to retrieve one or two items.
By: G-ORDY - 15th September 2013 at 16:12
Indeed ! They built a new one using this as a pattern!
Actually quite a lot of the original structure was incorporated by Tom Storey – I’ll look out my notes – mind you its had a few more crashes and rebuilds since then!

Honest, Ken. It wasn’t me who borrowed your pictures and failed to return them!
