book idea – The Hanna Men

Greetings.
I wrote to Sarah Hanna last year with the idea of producing a DVD about the film/TV work of both Ray and Mark. It was probably too soon after her father’s death, but I also think a book – with a DVD – could be produced.

As a New Zealander I am especially proud of their aviation achievements and spoke to them on regular visits to Wanaka and the odd trip to Duxford.
Mark contributed to my first book Warbirds Over Wanaka (Reed Publishing (NZ) Ltd, 1994. I have since co-authored Wanaka Warbirds (with Warren Russell) (Reed 1998), and Spitfire – The New Zealand Story (Reed 2000).

I have already written a one hour script for a DVD. This has clips from most of their film and TV work. I await Sarah’s comment on this project. Then copyright issues can be worked through with the film distributors.

A book should be written. I’m up to it. I think it would be great to have access to both Ray’s and Mark’s logbooks to make both projects definitive/comprehensive works. They deserve it.

Comments please.

Gerard

It’s certain.

It’s either certain nothing will happen if I can’t find someone prepared to act as either editor or lead author; likewise, if someone who’s prepared to do the work (there’s a lot of work, but nothing beyond someone who can manage to write a couple of pages couldn’t be up to…) it’s certain to happen!

I have a number of other book projects on the go, and while I’ve anticipated a gap turning up where I can work on a ‘for free’ project, they’ve all been filled with stuff that provides some income. Anyone in the writing game will know that’s a no choice choice. So, if someone’s prepared to say “I’ll have a bash at the bulk of the work” we will provide support and guidance, and there’s a number of people who’ve offered support (and if that’s you, your name is noted, and filed in the file…).

Cheers

I feel any book would be a really great Tribute to both Ray and Mark Hanna and would be something that in a way is long overdue.
I would love to play a part in it at least, I have never written a book before so i am a little scared to take a project on alone without help, MH434 is such a great subject.

Time is short even with computers! Digital books can happen a lot quicker than old offset and can do short runs much more efficiently, but Christmas? Next year or the year after?

I KNOW how much time it takes to do ONE illustration even on the computer(where I work). There is gathering the data, roughing it out, detailing it up, getting torn a new one and re-detailing most of it again! Especially something as sacred as a spit. People will be counting the rivets!

If you could bash it out before Christmas, t’would help with the old present dilemma!

Sorry, it’s not going to happen. 2008 might be possible.

What about producing it as a DVD (much cheapness)- Books are sooo last century…

Ah ha ha. I’m not even going to offer a bet as to which is going to be around longer… Leastways no-one’s really talking of the format that’s going to replace books, while that’s a live debate on DVD. Oh, and it’s for ‘charidee’, and will raise funds – ‘cheapness’ isn’t wanted.

An accompanying DVD with appropriate multi-media material has been considered, with the book, and offers of help made in that area. Let’s see.

surely the book idea could still be a runner.

Dan Johnson did some fantastic colour panels of MH434 on thread t=20097 but non of them are of the Swire era, it would certainly fill a gap if he has some.

That had to be one of the top ten threads this board has produced.

Surely the book idea could still be a runner.
