The Turkish mass media is still insisting that a total of 40 attack helicopters are destined for the Republic.
The 6th March 2002 edition of the Turkish Daily News (english paper) refers to “12 out of 40 attack helicopters” which have been delivered to Cyprus in containers for assembly at Paphos.
Note however, that the newspaper wrongly named the Mi-35E type as “Black Shark” which is an obvious mistake. This is the Russian name of Ka-50-2 Hokum-A.
The paper also credits the Cyprus Republic with an alleged defence budget of $2.5 billion US dollars, a number that sounds utterly ridiculous. The ACTUAL gross defence budget of the Cyprus Republic is closer to $600 million US dollars / OR $450 million Cyprus pounds.
Is anyone prepared to comment on this alleging of 40 attack helicopters or does the integrity of the article speak for itself?
