Mickeys tea bar

Gents

Many years ago Mickeys tea bar was the place to visit when spotting at Mildenhall and I was wondering if anyone out there has any photos of this establishment? I still have a menu from here and it makes fascinating reading.

A little local knowledge for today’s visitors to ‘Little America’

Just down from the Mildenhall 29 threshold there is a vet’s surgery (animals, not old aviators). Parked to the side you’ll find a Caribbean takeaway mobile. The food is delicious. The goat curry and the jerk chicken being favourites.

For Lakenheath there is nowhere better than the Filipiniana in the village centre. Friendly folks and scrumptious food.

McDeci’s every time. See off your kite, wander down to burger bar on the line and place your order, sunbathe, eat and wander back just as said kite returns from dacm, having been given a good slap by the aggressors, local Starfighters, Luftwaffe F4’s, Bitburg Eagles etc. A stomach full of America’s best beef and a pair of disheartened aircrew off to see where it all went wrong… = Happy Lineys 😎

Oh and then off shift for the bus to “Caggy” and some serious beach action:very_drunk:

Great question…and a reminder that our hobby is (or at least should be) more than just aeroplanes and their associated numbers and “Boys Own” tales of daring do by aircrews.

Your definition of ‘fascinating reading’ is obviously different to mine..!

Mickey’s prices are clearly decimal, but in the dim (and very distant past, when I was at RAF Mildenhall) the dollar was at 2.40 to the pound – thus 1 US cent = 1 UK (pre-decimal) penny. Most of the shops, pubs, etc, around Mildenhall and Lakenheath in them days would then take either currency.
But the best, on this subject, was on one vast NATO exercise. I can’t remember if it was in Denmark, Netherlands, or Germany. But there was either the local “Bratty Bar” (similar to MIckey’s) or the national equivalent of the NAAFI/WRVS. They would take payment in a wide variety of currencies, and ask you (in several different languages) what currency you wanted your change in!! All this was done in their heads (but to what actual accuracy is not known!!) whilst “Bratty & Chips”, or “Char & Wads”, was being prepared!!
But on Ex Square Hole in Malaya you could tell where “The Enemy” were expected to land (by sea, or parachute) by the number of food-selling wagons clustered thereby. We – the defending forces – had been forbidden by the Ex Planners from knowing the Enemies landing sites. But the smell of curry puffs on sale in the middle of the jungle soon gave the game away!!!!!!
