Microlight Flying With PPL

Been trying to get a constructive answer to this question for quite a while.

Can I legally fly a microlight aircraft on a PPL?

I have held a full PPL for many years but cannot afford to fly “real” aircraft as much as I would like. I quite fancy buying something I can stick in the garage and tow behind the car to a local field.

However, enquiries with any Microlight organisations always end up with the “pay us £140 an hour and we will train you” type of replies and they’re very reluctant to discuss anything without getting paid.

Indeed, with any of the enquiries that I’ve made, the costs have always been more expensive than flying a proper light aircraft.

How can this be when these things are only using about a gallon of fuel an hour? It only costs £115 an hour (including fuel) for the Cessna 152 that I usually hire.

Looking at eBay it would appear that the going rate for a weight-shift microlight is around £1500 – £2000!

So if I bought one of these and my PPL is still “current” can I legally fly it using my PPL?

Hi Val. I renewed my SEP this summer as it was nearly 10 years since I last renewed it and it was going to be a serious pain to revalidate in the future if it went over that time. I’m interested in microlights too so made some enquiries. I was told that you can fly a microlight on a JAA/CAA PPL however you will need to get a microlight add-on to your license (probably pass a GFT with associated training to be able to do so and undoubtedly pay the CAA a further fee). The problem with this route is that as well as satisfying the renewal requirements for the micolight add-on you must also satisfy the SEP requirements as well. If you pay more wedge to transfer your license to a NPPL you can then do a micolight test to qualify fo a NPPL(M). This NPPL(M) can be revalidated without the necessity to keep the pure NPPL valid.

This is it as I understand it. If I am incorrect please feel free to correct me.
