Hi guys,
Here are some photos from the Friday of MAAM’s WWII Weekend in Reading PA. Sorry about the dodgy quality of some of the pics!

I think it was the rain! Note the amount of Zinc Chromate showing through on the fin – I thought it looked like the effort of a modeller who had just discovered weathering 😉
But Eddie you keep telling me you like the well used look on aircraft. 😀 😮

Eddie,
Les Duponts FM-2 looks clean for once or was that because of the Rain 😀

Thanks Guys, I had been told that the Canadian built Hurricanes were fitted with Hamilton props, on which the hub was too large to have the standard spinner fitted.
Which is why when you see photo’s of these aircraft in RCAF services during WW2 they generally don’t have a spinners fitted.
Now that they have found their way into the hands of the restorers they have been fitted with an over large spinner which is slightly proud of the cowling.

Yes that is quite correct Archer.

is it an optical illusion or is the Hurricanes spinner actually slightly wider then the front end of the engine cowling?
It’s an optical illusion. I’m sure someone will correct me but if I remember correctly there’s a small ridge that stands up from the front of the engine cowling. You are looking at the back of this, and that gives the illusion of the larger spinner. I think the ridge is there to catch oil from the prop hub and keep it away from the windscreen.

Melvyn, Is that your vote for proportional representation?
Thanks Eddie 😀
In proportional representation, my ass would get more of a say in the vote than my brain!

Nice photos, however is it an optical illusion or is the Hurricanes spinner actually slightly wider then the front end of the engine cowling?

I have complete faith that despite my earlier assertion the roundels are perfectly accurate to RAF specifications…!

Looking at this pic of MJ730, are the roundel proportions correct…? 😉
They are quite definitely correct for that particular aeroplane at this particular point in its preservation.
Or
to put it another way.
It correctly represents the way the aeroplane is represented in its current representation.
I hope that clears things up.

Nah – the people that painted it obviously had no clue what they were doing 😀 😀 😀

If I had known you were going I would have got you to say hello to Pete the guy in the office (top man) and got a picture or two of the Cloudster they have there.

The P61 doesn’t look a lot different to when I last saw it about 18 months ago but there is a lot of work to be done inside that fuselage!
The MAM had a series of expensive problems, like blown engines on some of the other aeroplanes along with lower visitor numbers to the museum post 9-11. This has set the P61 back a bit which is a shame as the quality of what they are doing is great. I did a piece on this for Aeroplane a few years back and pop in every so often as I get over to Philly for a yearly meeting and try to drop over to Reading while I am there to catch up on progress.

Funny you should mention the Provost – I did get a picture as it happens!

Ahhhh…P-61 shots :), even if they are only part of the plane. Nice pics Ed.

Robbelc,
The Provost is owned by Mr. Mike Dale, ex CEO of Jaguar North America. He’s the reason Jaguar has been sponsoring many aviation related events in recent years. He was an ex-vampire pilot, and He flew the provost in training
