I am looking for a good mid-range lens for my Canon 40D….already have the 100-400….been looking at the Tamron 80-200 or Canon 70-300….i have a 70-300 on my Nikon and still find it difficult to get full shots from somewhere like Myrtle Avenue Heathrow…and advice?

How about trying the Sigma 28-300mm, super little lense with excellent results, can be found at very reasonable prices as well.
