Midland Air Museum – any thoughts etc?

Its holiday time again, so may push BSG Junior into the car Friday (am lucky enough to have a company fuel card now so am happy to crank up some miles) from the deep south we’ve hit Cosford, Hendon, Yeovilton & Duxford.

Newark another day I think, Midland musuem looks great – wondered if anybody had been, had any thoughts etc?

stand corrected, am a moron.

first post said “newark another day”, and i somehow misinterpreted every other word in the post..

excuse me, perhaps a slight friday morning hangover is to blame…

I’ll get my coat.

As long as people on here still use your last line Steve Young’s memory will live on.

Newark is another good museum. Visited the Canberra T.11 WH904 that my father flew with 228 OCU Leeming 1960-61. Got to see the Varsity well cared for. Aaaah ! the smell on entering. It reminded me of 38 years ago !! when I flew in the Cranwell machines as an Air Cadet.

Very nice museum, two really well presented hangars, and some a/c you wouldn’t expect to see in a museum of that size.

Some of the outdoor exibits look a bit rough, which gives you a bit of a bad impression as you pull into the car park, but i’m (reliably) informed that they are in the process of, or about to start, working to restore some of these.

I think that you are getting Midland Air Museum mixed up with here www.newarkairmuseum.org

As of yesterday – the Buccaneer now has 801 Squadron ‘pink markings’ on one side; the Meteor NF14 is off its wheels [tyres being filled] and the Dove is heading towards Iraqi Petroleum markings thanks [I understand] to images provided by a poster on here!

Agree with TEXANTOMCAT on the second hand books, definitely worth a look in the shop on the way out.

Didn’t get a look in the vulcan when we went, as it was the monday after Waddington, so the volunteers were a bit thin on the ground.

Elvington is worth a look, if you’re heading north and someone else is paying for the fuel!

Excellent museum,we also sat in the Meteor F.8 cockpit. Good model displays on Armstrong Whitworth history. Well stocked shop and guides very enthusiastic.

And if you make it on Sunday – pop over to the Hunter and say hello! I’ll be spending the day tinkering with her and will gladly give you an in-depth tour!
