Mil V-12 Homer, at Monin Airfield, Moscow.

Some drone footage. Looks well worth a visit (when it’s warmer)

Nice bit of camber on the Mi-26 rotors – great photos and collection.

They’re like that ‘cos its from a diorama I did of a Mi-26 lifting a downed USAF MH-47E in Afghanistan…… so they are under strain…

I was trying to depict this scene…….

Nice pictures of the very impressive Mil V-12. As an air traffic controller I handled this machine when it came in to land at Schiphol Airport Amsterdam in 1971 on its way to the Paris Airshow Le Bourget.

Interesting design looks like something out of Thunderbirds. I looked at pictures of the interior on airliners.net . The lower front deck is the cockpit and the upper front deck is the navigators station.

It was designed to disperse ICBM payloads – brought in by the An-22 to forward airfields – normal payload 20 tonnes, max payload 40 tonnes.

It had the rotors and drive train from TWO Mi-6 helicopters

Here’s my 1/72 scale model of it…. next to a Mi-2….

Next to an Il-76……

Next to its successor, the Mi-26 – plus a Mi-2 and Mi-1….

It is well worth a visit – I’ve been a dozen times now.

The V-12 had been given a fresh coat of paint when I photographed it in 2002…..

http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/moscow_2002_files/02_day01_22.jpg

It was looking good in 2005……

It looked a bit weary in 2011…..

http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/moscow_2011_files/day2_015.JPG

It had a makeover in 2012…. it totally the wrong colours !!!!

It is great that the exhibits are being cared for – by volunteers on a shoestring budget – but they are only paying lip service to historical accuracy, which is a shame.

BTW, the V-12 at Monino is the second prototype – the first one is at Mils home base at Panki on the other side of Moscow.

Nice, the worlds largest helicopter bigger than a C130 I read somewhere.
