There is also a 1955 Piper Apache being advertised at the moment for £15k, which seems criminally cheap for a lovely looking aircraft, but the running costs just preclude it from being a worthwhile undertaking. (Aztecs start from about £30k as well)
You have to get your twin rating, your engine & prop maintenance is double, all your landing fees are double, the short-field/strip performance may not be brilliant and you can get some fairly basic/cheap singles that will out lift/perform them:(

Ahhhhhhhh Piper Cub!
I’ve always wanted a cub since I was a little lad (not all that long ago). I’m lucky that I was in the right place at the right time when this project came up. I’ve always wanted an old vintage aeroplane, and the way this is going its going to be spot authentic – watch this space.

The reality is that the kind of pilot that flies a Gemini does it almost purely for the satisfaction of owning a vintage machine – the cost of fuel and maintenance is often a secondary consideration. It’s not the kind of machine that appeals to a sport pilot – in itself a Gemini isn’t horendously expensive to operate – the number of hours that the breed average means that they don’t clock up huge hours each year.

You are dead right. A Gemini is nice but not a realistic ownership proposition these days unless you have unlimited funds and time to maintain it. I’m surprised somebody bid as much and am with Fournier Boy on this one. I know an L4 Cub went for almost as much recently and it’s not as desirable as a Cub – but then we would say that wouldn’t we. 😉

Older planes are harder to sell
The market for vintage planes is very poor now . You have to be a real enthusiast to operate one due to often higher costs. The new wave of private pilots are buying the light sports aircraft which are fuel efficient and lower maintenance.
There was a time when a well looked after vintage aircraft would go up in value but apart from a few types eg Moths it does not happen.

The last one I know of was local to me and sold recently (last couple of months) for around the 30k mark. That one had the original cirrus engines, recently overhauled with about 20 hours on them. Nice machine – not a cub tho!

Very limited market and not an easy aircraft to sell these days – it was being offered for sale for ages and he had to take a ‘Rodnoc’ 😀 in part exchange! At least that was easier to sell on as they are very popular now that all of them are allowed to go on Permits.

E Bay is often used as a cheap way of advertising an item.

Sign of the times
🙁 Unsold at £24,200, only two bidders were bidding.
EBay may be good for selling some things, but evidently not vintage aeroplanes. I would hope that a Gemini would fetch more than £24,200 or its a sad world that we are living in!

Thanks
Well spotted, G-AISD ex OO-RLD, presumably not been in the U.K. too long?
Thanks, at least I beat someone else to it!!!

Thirty grand for a gentleman’s carriage. People pay more than that for a secondhand BMW. What a funny world we live in!

What price?
£18000 starting price but there is a reserve not yet met. I wonder what the reserve is? What do Geminis fetch nowadays? I can remember I time when you could hardly give one away. But I am getting old!

She has been in the U.K probably three plus years – initially on the Belgian register. Was was rebuilt in the mid 1980’s by John Homewood down at Exeter.

Niiiice!
Based just down the road from me as well…..hmmm must get a twin rating once I re-qualify!
I have always liked these and they are ridiculously cheap as well, just the performance (marginal on 1 engine) and the running costs put people off
