Miles M.13 Hobby

Having spoken of the beauty of the Heston Type 5 Racer, its not surprising that the Miles Hobby comes to mind. As far as I am aware, very little of its history of this tiny pre WW2 single seat racing aeroplane is recorded – including the fate of the airframe post WW2. Can anyone add to this, in particular concerning:

– its operational history between its first flight on 4.9.37 and its sale to the RAE in 5.38;
– the use (if any) to which it was put, other than full scale wind tunnel research, by the RAE between 1938 and 1946;
– the circumstances of its post WW2 sale by the RAE to H.V.Kennedy (the former Miles’ assistant test pilot at Woodley);
– what became of the airframe after H.V.Kennedy removed its Gipsy Major engine for use elsewhere.

Finally has anyone seen photographs of the Hobby bearing its civil registration (G-AFAW) or military marks (L9706)? I have only seen photos of it bearing the marks U2 – as in that attached from my collection.

Someone, somewhere out there must know something about what happened to the Hobby! At least does someone have contact details for Peter Amos?

Many thanks! I have not seen that photo before. The fact that, in the RAE wind tunnel, the Hobby is still bearing the marks ‘U2’ makes me (a) wonder whether it ever carried the civil registration G-AFAW and (b) think that the military serial L9706 was only ever a paper allocation. I fear that unless someone can answer the questions posed in my original post, we will never know!

I’m am inclined to agree! Good look with the hunt though!

Sorry, but the civvy markings shot turned out to be the same image as yours. However, you may find this wind tunnel shot of interest?
Cheers

C’mon Moley! Where is the promised photo of the Hobby carrying civilian markings? My breath has been bated for several days now!

Interesting is Julian Temple’s suggestion that Hugh Kennedy bought the Hobby not just for its Gipsy Major (as suggested by Don Brown) but with a view to its restoration to flying condition but that this plan was abandoned due to a lack of documentation and parts. That seems a little odd bearing in mind that the purchase was in 1945 or 1946, when the Hobby was only 8 or 9 years old, and that Miles Aircraft were still in business at that time. Does anyone know what, if anything, Hugh Kennedy said on this matter?
