Those hangars should be a clue, but I don’t recognise them. I’ve asked a friend, and he can’t identify them either. We’ll search further.

Well I’m totally confused as to how the photo appeared again! Can’t see how to delete it either!

p.s. when did Birsfelden close?
Birsfelden’s last passenger flight was in 1950 and I’ve also seen 1953 given as its final closure date.

Perhaps a possessor of Peter Amos’ book will know?

Does anyone know what became of HB-UPI…..???
I see from my copy of Don Brown’s Miles Aircraft since 1925 (Putnam) 50 Whitney Straights were built.
I was surprised how many survived the Second World War.

If my (weak) translating is correct some of the Birsfelden hangars were moved on its closure to Mulhouse. Perhaps Laurence can confirm? Whilst googling I also found this pic of an unspatted HB-EPI taken in 1960 (from http://www.bsl-mlh-planes.net/picture/picture_id/1146)

The hangars might provide a clue. From 1937 to, apparently, 1956 HB-URO was based at Birsfelden Aerodrome, near Basle, which seems no longer to exist. Online there does not appear to be any information about or photographs of this aerodrome. Laurence Garey (l.garey) is, I suspect, the man to consult with a view to identifying the subject and location of this photograph, Duggy.

Thanks gentlemen.
So what are we looking at?
By: avion ancien - 30th September 2018 at 20:18
There don’t appear to have been any Swiss registered Monarchs.

I have a photo of HB-EPI taken in the mid 50’s and the windows are different with a split main window so not that one.

Think it could be an M.11 Whitney Straight, Duggy. There were at least a couple registered pre-war HB-EPI and URO. Nice photo 🙂
