Hi all,
Despite every endeavour to keep my lovely Miles Magister as authentic as possible, the replica Sutton Harnesses are reaching the end of their 10 year life and need to be replaced.
The original manufacturer has been unable to obtain the correct cotton webbing.
We have Z-Type Harnesses fitted to The Collections Maggie. Whilst not accurate, they are undoubtedly stronger and easier to use.
All we need are the metal parts, the Nylon webbing can be replaced.
The Z-Type Harness is fitted to the Bulldog and Chipmunk.
All help, leads appreciated.
Happy to part with cash or a decent ride in either the Maggie or the Storch from Old Warden.
A real shame if we have to ground the aircraft this season. I hope somebody out there can help.

Exactly – great to see the forum actively benefiting historic aviation again, as well as just talking about it!

Have at last tracked down a source of the correct pattern webbing. How much does Anglia Sailplanes want? At present 400 meters in stock.

Donaghys Industries are the antipodean manufacturers of the 2″ pebble weave. I will give them a phone on Monday and ascertain that they still manufacture. My last batch was white but I will see if they can provide in the standard khaki.
OK sorry about that but Donaghys have sold off their webbing business. However, I think I have located another, possibly approved, source. Am awaiting delivery of a sample that this firm have been supplying to the aviation industry in years past.

Hi all,
Very helpful thank you!
Stu Hoy of Anglia sailplanes cannot get the webbing. They are the original m/f’s.
Hookers may be an option if we can’t find a set of Z-Types. However, I am gravitating towards Z’s if we decide against Suttons and will put more effort into the search.
Stan – Great to hear from you, and thanks for your very kind offer! Logistics and timescales may be a problem. I wonder if you could share your supplier with Anglia Sailplanes here in the UK, or PM me with their details??
My concern is one of timescales.
I would of course prefer period belts.
All the best

Hi Peter,
I have a source of supply for the origional “Pebble weave” webbing and have just bought a new roll. I am in the process of making up a new set of Sutton straps for the Fox and the Minor so can do a set for you if you have no luck with the above suggestions.

HP,
It might be worth contacting Hooker Harness in America. When I spoke to them at Oshkosh in 2006, they mentioned that they can/do make a Sutton harness as well. They don’t publicise it because it doesn’t meet the current safety standards compared to their normal range but they showed me photos of a previous Sutton they had made.
Cheers,
Matt

As Bruce has said can Stu Hoy at Anglian Sailplanes not supply new suttons ? Thats where I got my last set from for a DH 60.
If not try willan harnesses, www.willans.com They will make up harnesses to any spec you want with webbing any colour you want, they do a twist catch similar to Z type or a lever catch similar to american hookers that may look more period. A/C is on a Permit so they are exceptible. They made up the harness’s for the BE2 and they are very good belts.

Have you tried Stu Hoy, or is he the original manufacturer to whom you refer?
