Miles Martinet Wartime Photographs – Can You Help Please

Hello All,

As some of you may be aware I am currently researching the service history of the Miles M25 Martinet. Whilst I have managed to locate a number of post war photographs, as EM700 of 226 OCU attached, WWII in service photos have proved elusive. If any formite has any leads to potential photos, or have any photos in their personnel collection they are willing to share it would be greatly appreciated.

Whilst searching for wartime in service shots I would also be delighted to see any post war / scrapping images that people may have ๐Ÿ˜‰

Kindest regards,

Tim

Somewhere earlier in the this thread I was harping on about an in – service shot of MS 902. Iยดve now found it again, even though it is not from the same source as I originally got the picture. Here is the same picture, courtesy of www.flugheimur.is

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d22/Galdri/Martinet.jpg

This picture is taken after the aircraft left the service, or on the 6th of July 1946 when the RAF turned RAF Station Reykjavik over to the Icelanders. On the day, there was an airshow, and this picture is probably taken on that occasion.

T6Flyer,

This I believe, via Air Britain, is RG971 ex771 Sqn.

“20.10.49 Flying Accident 771 Sqn Lee-on-Solent during test flight aircraft suffered engine vibration and whilst making emergency landing it stalled and the undercarriage collapsed.13.12.49 wreckage R.N.A.R.Y. Donibristle 26.12.49 S.O.C.; 03.52 noted Balado Bridge dump coded LP/577”

Kind regards,

Tim

PS Still very much interested in ANY Martinet related photos

Thanks for sharing the painting Lindy’s Lad, very nice indeed, 4 AGS one assumes.

Seafire – I think we are now in the realms of a general Martinet thread and long may it last ๐Ÿ™‚

Bentley – See the photo above, which is Woodley – Martinet sections about to meet the torch!

Thanks one and all and please keep them coming.

Kind regards,

Tim

According to Flight Global
http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1949/1949%20-%201334.html
G-AHOB was a Master II, painted yellow in the King’s Cup 1949 and flown by W/C J Armour.

Sorry no pictures but in the late 40s at Woodley we watched rows of Masters/ Martinets being hacked and then set ablaze with Verey lights going off.

Later saw G-AHOB at Woodley in what I am sure was a cream paint job. Was HOB a Master or Martinet?

One correction

Tim
These may be new to you, postwar though. I have no idea of copyright or origins as more details disappeared in a hard drive crash!

Nice shots- that “other plane” is a Tempest Mk.II, not a Fury (as the photo is titled).

I notice the original question was wartime shots, and everybody is coming up with postwar shots. Not that I’m complaining!

Laurence,

My understanding of the lineage of the ‘TO’ code is initially 61 OTU this unit redesignated 203 Advanced Flying School (01.07.47) codes TO, UU plus others then redesignated again (01.09.49) to 226 OCU where the TO code was continued.

I was under the impression that 228 OCU carried the ST code, but I stand to be corrected by others more knowledgeable than me. Will dig out the old EM700 photo to see if it has a date but believe it was only on strength of 226 OCU from 10.03.52 before transfer to 12 M.U., Kirkbride 05.02.54.

Kind regards,

Tim

re EM700

Tim, it just occured to me that I did not record the unit markings which are visible (partly) on your first photo of EM700 when I saw it at MH in 1952. Nor the other three. I would probably have noted the markings if there had been any, so I wonder if they had been removed in the meantime … or added later? When was your photo taken?
By the way, what were these markings? They look like TO-x” from your photo, but Bowyer and Rawlings give “TO” as 61 OTU and 228 OCU. I am confused!

The archivist of the Martlesham Heath Museum tells me that all 4 of the Martinets I saw there in 1952 were from 226 OCU, so they were based at Stradishall, and were probably just visiting!

Tim re EM700 at MH

Thanks for the response Tim. I suppose the 4 Martinets were at MH for target towing duties. I seem to recall someone told me they were not based there, but visitied for firing practice over the North Sea. I shall investigate further.

Galdri – Thanks for the link, Ken Fostekew at the Museum of Berkshire Aviation has been very helpful regarding MS902; although the service photo would have been great if you ever recall where the original came from please keep me in mind ๐Ÿ˜‰

Chumpy – Thanks for sharing MS912 FJU of the CGS based Leconfield at the time (but not necessarily taken there) but when did the Tempest TT.5’s come on strength? Martinet Trainer also a fine photo PM sent

Mark 12 – Can you confirm any additional detail on the colour photo, it is magnificent

Mean_Machine – Would be very interested in a photo of the rudder pedal assembly as also trying to collate a register of known Martinet relics. Thanks for the ‘heads up’ on the WARG display. I have been in contact with them previously and have details.

Thanks once again for all your replies and please keep them coming…….

Kind regards,

Tim

Thanks Mark. It’s a great shot and I saved it merely for my own interest. Couldn’t recall from whence it came. Since you posted it once before, I guess you don’t mind it showing up again!:)
