Do any members have experience of converting an ex military bonedome to civilian use – can I use the existing mic. and earphones?

Maurice:
Is the helmet used? Can you be sure it is not damaged – which may render it useless? Is it a good fit? Military guys have their helmets made to measure.
let us know how you get on.

Ahh yes, those Kiwi helmets are well praised by many warbird pilots.

Then you may need a lead to convert the one plug, into two seperate plugs.
You will need to know if you are using a US or UK Nato (single pin) plug too. The look very similar, but are different.
The type of radio you are plugging into will also determine what type of microphone you use.
My totally wonderful Campbell Aeroclassics helmet has two adaptors and two mikes so that I can change between US NATO/twin-pin/UK NATO plugs and round/long (electret) microphones, so that I can get any combination for any aircraft. What a godsend.

Ours were converted by Timeless leather helmets and avionics, reasonable price and work very well.

Unless you already own the helmet I would suggest you try Mart Aviation Ltd. They do refurbished ones in working condition and available with either NATO standard plugs or normal civilian single jack so, you order the one you want.

Many military helmets (well, the American Gentex ones anyway) have 19ohm impedence speakers in them.
You need to buy 300ohm impedence speakers for them. Changing them is easy.
Then you may need a lead to convert the one plug, into two seperate plugs.

like Yak139 i converted my 10B by using a David Clack microphone and boom assy, got mine from Addams Aviation. Ear phones remain unchanged. If you want to use a mask you still can, just remove the old mike and fix the David Clack mic in there instead.

I converted my RAF Mk10B by changing the microphone (bought from headst services) and then making an adapter lead to go from the military connector to the standard two jack plugs.
