Miracle On The Hudson Plane Museum Bound

Carolinas Air Museum is the new home for the UsAirways Airbus that made a forced landing in the Hudson River two years ago. It is to be conserved and reassebled just as it was when it came out of the river.

Is it really worth preserving the whole aircraft when its just going to corrode away at a rate of knots ? To my mind the important part is possibly the cockpit if you wish to honour the pilot -the passengers were spectators to the event.

It is a neat idea but do they really need to have everything intact down to the drinks on board at the time??

I bet it’ll smell a bit by now though! 😮

They have a nice museum !

I fly out of Charlotte alot and the folks there have done a nice job over the years in promoting aviation history ..good collection of aircraft … this is a very nice addition for the museum . That was some story and top notch flying the Captain for sure………. will have to visit and check it out . Inside the terminal in the international wing is a nice collection of aviation history from North Carolina ……… top stuff on Maj George E Preddy Jr..top scoring ace of the 352nd FG in WW II !

Funny Peter they did say on the Documentary that if the ditch switch had been thrown the rear doors would not have submerged as the water coming in through the damage to the rear fuselage so she would have floated for hours on flat water as the ditch switch opens vents so flooding can be contained and spread over the whole fuselage underfloor.

The only thing allowing water to spread into the forward underfloor spaces would have done is to reduce the forward flotation, thus reducing the flotation of the whole aircraft, and likely making it sink faster…. the skin damage to the lower rear fuselage was far too extensive to prevent the flooding aft.

Here is a pic which shows the skin damage… yes, the tail has been unbolted, but look lower.

Here is the whole sequence. Note the intact skin on the underside of the forward section:

They said on the news it is liek a time capsule and they want to have it just as it was when it came out of the river.

If it`s total authenticity they`re looking for …why not have it floating in a huge tank of Hudson river water?

That’s true I never thought about that. Although keep in mind there was significant damage to the rear belly APU area though so wether or not it was watertight there…?

But considering that the crew did such a fantastic job in getting the plane down and even more unbelievable in one piece AND not loosing 1 passenger maybe the plane being the only casualty was a good thing and now even that is going to a good home.

Curly, also a contributing factor was the opening of the rear doors as well.

Thats good news, I thought it would have a bigger value as a spares source but at least it has been kept for future generations.

Funny though I was watching a documentary at Xmas that said the plane would not have sunk if someone had flicked the ditch switch but getting everyone out was obviously more important.
