The first firing of an infra-red guided MICA missile from a Mirage 2000-5 combat aircraft was successfully carried out on June 23 at the Cazaux test range operated by the French defence procurement agency, DGA (Délégation Générale pour l’Armement).

Despite adverse weather conditions, initial results were conclusive in terms of firing sequence, airframe separation, and destruction of the target. Detailed analysis of the results continues.

This test firing is part of the certification process of the latest configuration (SF1IR) of the Mirage 2000-5 combat aircraft, due to be completed by the end of the year.

The new configuration will extend the aircraft’s interception capabilities in terms of range as the missile is guided by the aircraft’s radar (using the LAM link) during the initial flight phase. The missile’s homing head takes over when it is able to “lock-on” to the intended target.
