A spanish AF Mirage F-1 M has crashed today near Neuburg, south Germany. The pilot lieutenant Vidal ejected safely, he has been taken to a civil hospital for
a medical revision, but he has minor injuries and it´s expected that he will return to Spain tomorrow.
The aircraft crashed without weapons, apparently a fire started in the engine, the pilot noted the fire alerts activated so he decided to eject at about 4000 feet.
The aircraft and the pilot are based at Los LLanos AB, near Albacete. A year ago, another F-1 from the same base crashed in Spain, killing its pilot. Also, I remember another crash of a spanish Mirage in Belgium, two or three years ago, without casualties.
The spanish F-1 fleet has been modified to a common standard , the F-1M, and they are going to be retired as soon as the EF enters operational service.
All the mirages are based at Los llanos, after the closure of Manises AB (Valencia) and the return of the F-1s based at the canary islands, replaced by Hornets.
