……………..who’s the most beautiful of them all!
I found myself wondering, what is the most beautiful civil aircraft that I have photographed? To my mind, the competetion was not great (although it may have been if I had been alive and in possession of a camera in the 1930s!). Two examples of it, from my collection, are attached. I suspect that more will disagree than will agree with me. If so, what do you consider it to be? I shall await, with interest, the posting of photographs of a civil aircraft more beautiful than the Comper Swift!

Well, getting back to the prettiest, what about the Planet Satellite? At the other end of the spectrum, I have just acquired an old postcard of a Potez 75 (F-ZWSA). It would not achieve many plaudits on the catwalk!

This would be gorgeous even if just a twin, but with that cheeky little engine on the nose……well – simply enchanting!
That’ll be a Northrop YC-125 Raider if your curious. Awesome short field capability, tragically short production run.
Does anyone else think the Douglas DC-5 was quite smart looking sadly not got a piccy though.
Be lucky

is it me, or is that a military aircraft….? lol.:D 😉
got no picture since my hard drive is not working, but I rather like the dragon rapide….. elegant and so very basic. DH seemed to produce some beautiful designs.
I think by the time that photo was taken the Hunter had been withdrawn from military servive a few years before thus making it a civilian aircraft…. :p

How about the Waitomo PL-12 Airtruck?
(more pics of it at http://rnzaf.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=civil&action=display&thread=1187402619 )
Now that makes the Auster Agricola look pretty! The Airtruck reminds me a bit of the aircraft in the film – ‘The Flight of the Phoenix’ – where a Fairchild Packet (?) crashes in the desert and the crew make an “escape” aircraft out of one engine, the wings and other salvaged bits and pieces. Was a full size version of the “escape” aircraft actually constructed on the film lot and/or location? I assume that any flying shots were of a model.

I know that it’s not really what this thread started out as being about, but having looked at the photo of the GAL.38, I found myself wondering what posters think to be the ugliest aircraft that they have ever seen. I think that you would have to go a long way to beat the Salmon Tandem Monoplane (G-EBHQ)(q.v. Jackson, ‘British Civil Aircraft’ (1974), vol.III, p.289). Can anyone beat that?

I had not seen it! That said, I find it difficult to see my own cateracts these days…..

LL ,
Given your admiration for the Rapide, you will probably have already noticed the one illustrated in this very thread. Not very clearly I admit, but in the background behind G-ACTF!
I surmise this picture was taken at Booker and the Rapide is probably G-AKIF (now flying at Duxford) The Comper was owned by BEA pilot and VAC stalwart Alan Chalkley.

I can’t believe anyone thinks it can be anything but the venerable Hunter!

Can’t resist…..

Umm . . to restrain the thread, the original question was “what is the most beautiful civil aircraft that I have photographed?” This would eliminate anything not photographed by the poster himself/herself?
You’re right! I adopted the particular approach to restrain myself from posting photos of the Miles Hobby, the De Havilland T.K.4 or the Heston Type 5 Racer. But I can’t complain at having to look at the photographs posted!

I was thinking more along the lines of a cross between a Twin Pin and An-2. Make it low wing and it brings to mind the DHA3 Drover, now that was a pretty little machine.
By: Lindy's Lad - 21st August 2007 at 00:34
My god – it looks like a collision between a twin pin and a lawnmower….:D

“What is that-apart from ugly?”
It looks like the General Aircraft GAL.38, although I’ve only ever seen it with a single fin. Can you shed any more light on the tail configuration Propstrike? Ofcourse, it was designed to a military spec so doesn’t count really anyway!Below is a link to more info about the GAL.38:

Are we allowed de-militarised aircraft? If so then I’d go for the Handley Page Halton.
(Ok, I know one’s an RAF C.Mk.VIII Halifax, but for one thing I couldn’t resist, and for another a number passed on to civilian operators when retired from RAF service- so there :D)
By: mike currill - 20th August 2007 at 22:46
😮 What is that-apart from ugly? Looks like the tug backed it into the hangar wall and then the roof fell on it.
