Miscellaneous Pictures 1967:
This set contains enlargements taken from some Ilfochrome slides. The colours are rather dull and the film is grainy, so I am getting this one out of the way with the intention of better things to come in future.
A scene across the river in Southampton. There is a Princess flying boat being dismantled on the opposite bank. By comparing landmarks in the original picture with google street view, I estimate that the location of the aircraft is off Hazel Road immediately south of what is now (was?) the Vestas premises.

Anson I G-AMDA at Halfpenny Green air display 1967. A picture taken when the aircraft was still airworthy (obviously, in as much as flew in and out).

Super Ace G-AKVF at Halfpenny Green air display 1967. I was struck by how stubby it looks.

P-51 N6356T taxying at Halfpenny Green 1967. I didn’t notice that something was landing in the distance when I took the picture.

N6356T flypast. A very dirty aeroplane, but perhaps that is intended to be part of the filmset colour scheme?

Rollason Beta G-ATLY. What is odd about this photograph is that although the Beta is a racing design, there are no wheel fairings fitted.

When I flew a Beta (G-AWHV), it had been significantly modified for speed with faired wheel spats and had lost that ridiculously long undercarriage. Mind you, that did have the effect of a looooooooooong float on landing if you got the speed wrong:eek:
I hadn’t realised there were diffferences, so that sent me looking through my slides. Here is G-ATLY at a later date with the shorter spatted u/c and a new nose (and possibly a new engine?). As you point out, the short u/c geometry might have an interesting effect. If you put the tail down too soon, you would probably get an air cushion caused by the very low wing trailing edge, preventing the aircraft from settling.

What my picture earlier in the thread indicates is that they were broken up further north, just north of the itchen bridge.

There was certainly one if not two at calshot , but you may well be right about where they were broken up.

Hi I think you will find that the Hovercraft you took went to Cowes & not Ryde. I remember seeing them cocooned on the slipway at Cowes. I think they were broken up at Calshot Spit at the entrance to southampton water.

Think it was 1966 when I went to Southhampton and took the hovercraft across to Ryde, interesting journey. Remember seeing the 2 Saunders Roe Princess Fuselage hulks cocooned there. Got some slides I took at time (Kodachrome ,——somewhere here-in house) So I guess they must have been towed or a boat load back to Southampton to be scrapped. Shame !! as they were stored for many years.
Anybody know any more about their final demise ? Nice pics !! HP 111
