Surprisingly this anniversary seems to have passed by unnoticed – on 17th.December 1935 the first flight of the Douglas Sleeper Transport, the aircraft that was essentially the prototype of the DC3. And 80 years later there’s still hundreds of them out there earning their keep.

Actually guys, my comment was prompted by the fact that it hadn’t been remarked upon here – forumites are usually very hot on significant dates. Perhaps peoples attention was diverted by the social requirement to spend large quantities of money celebrating another (alleged) significant event. Nice to know the Springboks put up three, I not sure there’s that number flyable in the U.K. at the moment.
JB – nice spot, hadn’t realised that the B47 flew so early, was indeed a massive achievement.

I have a party every year. 🙂
Also the anniversary of the 1947 first flight of the B-47, an overlooked technical achievement coming so soon after the war. A real preview of the future.

Celebrations were held at several locations, including the US and South Africa – where, for example, three DC-3s were flown in formation at Rand.
