Mk.1a Spitfire – AR213….HELP?

New member here….so go easy on me 😀

I’ve been pointed in the direction of the forum by a friend of mine as I’m trying to contact a guy by the username of ‘Tom_W’

I’m a modelmaker by trade and am currently working on a radio controlled 1/4 scale Mk.1a Spitfire that myself and the customer I’m building it for will be competing in the ‘Team Scale’ catagory of the Top Gun invitational scale competiton in Florda in early May 2009.

My plan is to complete the model as AR213…….construction is well advanced and we hope to be test flying (in primer) in the next 4/6 weeks. If all goes to plan……the final detailing and painting will commence after that.

Here’s a few close up’s of some of the more ‘interesting’ parts completed so far……

I’m told ‘Tom-W’ has connections at Booker and may be able to assist in gaining access to the full-size for close up photographic purposes etc….

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Phil

Hi Guys……………..the other ‘50%’ of the Spitfire build team here!!

Thanks for all your kind words of encouregment etc…. over the last few months, it’s all VERY much appreciated.

Here’s another selection of photos from the 3 flights we made over the weekend…………………as well as a link to a short video of the 1st of the 3 flights. The onboard sound generator isn’t operative here, so apologies for the lack of ‘Merlin’ noise.

Finally…..thanks must go to Tom Woodhouse down at Booker for all of his help finalising the last small details, paintwork and markings…..we woudn’t have been able to produce what we have without him.

Cheers

Running repairs.

Mark

Thanks Mark.

I now see the black thing is a jack in the blown up pics.

Couldn’t quite decipher what it was in the original image and thought for some reason you’d done an observation test for us using Photshop! 🙂

How do you turn the scale prop?

Is it geared?

Just a huge powerful direct drive electric motor which pulls around 250AH – see here -> Spitfire Motor Test

Many thanks, but I was only 50% of the build team, Phil was the other 50%.

Fantastic Work Steve!

I’ve been watching this thread for a while now and it’s been great to see the progress of the project through to it’s finish.

I don’t think I’ve seen an R/C Spitfire looking so much like the real thing, and with so much attention to detail put in to it. 😀

Well done Steve!

Really was worth all that time of yours I guess, as can be seen by Mark12’s comparison shot. 🙂

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. It’s been great to see it come together and perform how we hoped, and the Merlin sound system is great. For the 1800 hours put into the build, we did wonder at times whether it would ever be finished. However, no time to sit back and relax I’m afraid, I’ve got some minor repairs and alterations to do to this radial powered Tigercat, then a large 250cc radial powered Yak 11 after that, and an aerobatic Yak for a 400cc radial.

Further joint projects with Phil ( fighteraces ) include a 1/4 scale Sea Fury ( also 250cc radial powered ), a 1/4 scale P-47, 1/5 scale Beech D-18, Hawker Tempest, and a rather large turbine powered Gloster E28!!

That lot should keep me busy!

That looks fantastic

A job very well done, that 8th picture of the underside looks so real, a carbon copy of a well known shot that (IIRC) Duxford used on some publicity and I’ve seen countless times. Well done, thanks for sharing.

The first flight attempt of the Spitfire about three weeks ago, lasted four circuits, when the motor speed controller cut out and the Spit was force landed, but on its gear luckily! It was either an over heating or over current problem.

Today things went much better with a new 300 AH speed controller. Two perfect flights, and here’s some of the pictures from the second flight. The model is still awaiting its pilot, so sorry for the empty office, but other than that, the pics say it all.

………….maybe a litte sad to see her go ?

Releived to see it go! I was beginning to think it would never leave my workshop. Final surface preparation, priming, painting and fitting out the cockpit has taken two months alone.

It was started in June last year and has fought us all the way. It needed many corrections to the mouldings to put right mistakes made by the guy who produced the original plug for the mouldings. Many of the mistakes we didn’t find until a long way into the build, and it would have actually been quicker to build from scratch rather than use the fuselage/wing mouldings. However, the owner had put a significant amount of cash into buying the moulds and basic moulded airframe, so we persisted.

I think the final hours on the build came to around 1900.
