A family member called me today and said he had a man stopping by his office (he’s a police officer) with a Mk II Browning Machine gun. The man had no idea what it was basically, and wanted to get rid of it.
From what the man had told the cop, he had tried to “activate it” but could not figure it out. The police officer had managed to load the gun by just pushing in a screwdriver at the right spot (I am personally no expert on machine guns).
The police officer had Googled this extensively and discovered the machine gun had come out of a Spitfire or a Hurricane (or perhaps other types which had these machine guns mounted in the wings).
He wanted to know how much a piece like this went for (it would have to be deactivated if it was to be sold).

What happened to all the Brownings dug up from Battle of Britain wrecks in the 70’s anyway? There should be hundreds in circulation…!
There quite a few about, but Battle Of Britain ones in the last 18 months to two years have been attracting what I think are ludicrous prices, these without doubt are the most sought after.
I would imagine a different market exists in Norway, so I think comparing values between two countries is difficult assuming this is the case. You couldn’t ship it over here for the UK market easily, so I personally think comparing is difficult to be accurate. My experience of our friends in the EU area is they always ask significantly more for their stuff than in this country.
Nice to see a picture if there is one.

I was surprised when I found the site linked below, I had not realised just how much was available in the Uk because I thought section 5 prohibited even parts of machine guns being kept..http://www.gunstar.co.uk/Machine-gun-for-sale/A/Other-Military-Guns
Heres a short listing with the final item listed as ex Portugese Hurricane for just under £3000 http://www.gunstar.co.uk/Other-Military-Guns-for-sale?sstr=browning%20machine%20gun

Yes, very much so – best to see the end result. As for the current value of a Browning – difficult. I would start at £500 and work upwards, maybe £1500 for a very good one on a good day. Don’t forget that those with history – esp from the Battle of Britain might command more.

Same site lists an MG15 estimated at £80 to £120……………..!
I think very low estimates to draw in bidders

Spitfirespares is good -just divide by three.
I think the auction will go for more than the estimate!

Prices can be odd to say least I’ve got a section one .303 lee enfield that I paid less for than you would now pay for a deactivated one!
By: DCK - 16th May 2015 at 21:03
Spitfire spares is the last place I would go for a sensible valuation. That said, it’s been a while since I bought a Browning. I paid £300 for one on the open market about 10 years ago.
Thanks for info, much appreciated. A Norwegian said £5000 so I have no clue really

Ok assuming its it good condition and can be traced back to a spitfire for example once deactivated in the region of£2000 to £2500. If you Google deactivated brownings you should find a few.
spitfirespares list the same price as you do.

Thank you for the clarification DCK.
It wasn’t clear from your post. I was merely pointing out the potential problems if, as I’d assumed, we were talking about the UK.
Sorry about that.

I cannot help wondering: has said Police Officer heard of Section 5 (1) of The Firearms Act, perchance?!
Wasn’t the focus of my question, but the machine gun is in police custody in Norway after the owner turned it in.
By: Oily Rag - 16th May 2015 at 18:33
And you are all assuming this story originates in UK…??
Different laws apply in many countries other than this one….
By: scotavia - 16th May 2015 at 17:55
Somehow I do not think the man will be getting his gun back without a lot of expense,I shudder to recall all the problems we had on crash sites with just bits of automatic guns and the law.

Price a visit to prison I would think very ilegal if still live!
