Mk II Artificial Horizon 6A/711

Any ideas about this one? A Mk II Artificial Horizon, 6A/711.

This is from ex-Cotswold Aircraft Restoration Group stock of instruments dating from the 40’s, 50’s and early 60’s; four crates of which have been released from deep storage; and appears to have never been installed in an aircraft judging by the original caging label… but, what aircraft?
We never managed to establish who, what or where during the CARG days; and extensive research has since come up empty.
There have been some suggestions that it may have been fitted to certain Marks of Spitfire; but most seem to have had the usual 6A/599, 6A/1488 or 6A/1519 variants.

What is interesting, is that the movement of the Horizon Bar is separate from the representation of the aircraft which rises and falls by means of an attachment rod to the gyroscope via the vertical slot in the background plate; thus indicating aircraft pitch and roll.

Any information would be much appreciated

After extensive research I came across this today…

On a Russian Aviation website!… Nothing here at home!
(Seems Ivan nicked the pic from Tim Kershaw’s fascinating book on the Jet Pioneers.)
It is the original instrument layout of the Gloster E28/39.

Must nip into the Jet Age Museum tomorrow and peer over the side just to make sure.

The April 1937 edition of AP1275 Volume 1 (published in 1939 for 7/6) gives this:

Looks like a 1936 date code, and is the little aircraft picture a biplane?

Also cheekily radioactive judging by appearance – do not suck it!
