Spitfire IX MK356 of the BBMF made a successful test flight in the hands of OC BBMF, Sqn Ldr Al Pinner, at Duxford today following overhaul and wing re-spar by The Aircraft Restoration Company. I have to say the silver scheme looks stunning and is an unusual, but authentic choice which should prove popular with the photographers…:)
Congratulations to all involved 😉

Full span wing now? Not clipped?
Yes full span but we have the option to go clipped when we want.
Glad you all like the new scheme and many thanks to Voy tech for supplying the original pictures to get the scheme/ markings right.

What makes this 601 Squadron scheme interesting, and perhaps even unique, is that it is a natural metal/silver scheme on a European theatre Spitfire during WWII hostilities.

Or UK post war though whether any IX/XVI’s remined in RAF service post war I can’t remember.
An old favourite from my model collection – RW396.

Great to see MK356 back in the air. Congratulations to all who worked to achieve that!
And also great to see yet another Polish-related scheme on a BBMF fighter – it’s three (perhaps three and a half) now.

A pleasant change from camo Spits.
Excuse my ignorance, but what theatre of ops were silver spits used, I notice on Robbos picture reference, that the photo of the original aircraft had a bomb underneath, now that would look nice on this one. Germany, late in the war?I assume that they were originally simply unpainted whereas this has silver paint for protection, presumably.
