On the 6th January 1944 Flt Off Harold Frederick Heninger was posted missing from bomber escort operation in Rouen area whilst Spitfire Xll EN223. Reports indicate that he turned back to escort another pilot who had engine trouble back to base, flying abreast at 4,000ft he was seen to drop back with black puffs of smoke comming from his engine. Flt Off heninger R/T stated that he was bailing out.
The excavation was filmed part of a forthcomming series on BBC “DIG WW2” presented by Dan Snow. The time capsule found 20ft below ground perfectly presurved, solved the mystery to the loss of EN223 and the sad events which claimed the life of Flt Off Harold Heninger. The series is due to be shown early 2012 on BBC2
The excavation team wishes to thank Laurent for all his efforts and research shared with the team. Attached are just a few of the dig

Excellent dig Gareth – look forward to seeing more.
Guess we will have to wait for the program – these producers do like to put embargos on the details being released prior to air – Are these the same bearers as the MkXIV? I did have the shattered remains of a couple from RN210 at Millom, but sadly they were not to be found when we collected our artefacts 🙁

Yes , a niece has been found at Calgary . Interestingly both Harold Heninger and his brother Raymond were posted to Sq 91 and they shared the same plane , Spit XII DL-B , as they were not allowed flying on the same ops . Raymond survived the war and died 20 years ago.

Is there any information on this RCAF pilot?
has any of the family been contacted or found?
Just found a Causality Report in the Globe and Mail that he was from Calgary, Alberta.
