Mobile phone use– rude or not

For people who may not have heard about this. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2353581/Sainsburys-customer-shocked-checkout-assistant-refuses-serve-mobile.html

“Jo Clarke , 26, was in the queue at her local Sainsbury’s, in Crayford, south-east London, when the checkout assistant refused to help her because she was on her phone”

Good for the checkout girl and Sainsburys ought to be seen to back her up.The customer is NOT always right in my opinion.

What do you think?

Read the story earlier and am in complete agreement with the posts here. I loathe the use of mobile phones publicly in confined spaces and resent the inability of users top be aware of their surroundings and the assumption that I am the slightest bit interested in the inanities of their conversations.

At work i have to deal with the general public who want information from me for their own benefit. I have several times asked people to remove headphones whilst i am talking to them and also sarcastically said to them “thats ok” when they walk away without saying thank you.
I also hate talking to people who wear sunglasses ,the eyes show the soul.

We don’t have a Sainsburys here but if i did i would be seeing their customer services dept get the checkout girl a bonus.

I think the girl at the checkout should be promoted, not ticked off.
And Sainsbury should change their policy

Totally rude.

Sainsbury should be ashamed of themselves for not standing behind their employee.

Very rude indeed, I see this a lot at check outs and it also delays people waiting in the queue. The next step seems to be when the assistant finally gets their attention is burrow in their handbag for money with phone clamped between shoulder and head. Following step is try and pack shopping with one hand.
Two days ago my wife and I were having a pub lunch and a couple of girls sitting a seperate tables some 20 feet apart were chatting to each other on the phone. sitting at a table inbetween them my wife and I could hear both sides of the conversation. I would ban then from pubs and resturants as well. At least when they are texting they are quiet. Utter madness!

I aggree with the checkout girl, and for the female in question being offered vouchers in compensation, well, it beggers beleif.

I was in an hotel restaurant a couple of years ago, and there was this chap, seated at his table on his mobile, he was shouting down the phone, everyone was getting annoyed at having to listen to his conversation, so much so, I called for the hotel Manager, and asked him to ask the chap on his mobile to tone it down, which he did. I received a “Looks would kill” from the chap with his mobile, however, we all had a quiet meal after that.
I just can’t make some people out.

Yes I saw this. What an absolutely stupid woman. Not only does she show her ignorance by talking on her phone
when someone is trying to serve her, but then goes to the press to tell everyone.

Unbelievable, but not unfortunately, an isolated incidence.
