OK, we’ve had ‘best’ and we’ve had ‘favourite’. My list is of those aircraft that have acheived icon status in their class.
Easy ones first.
Day Bomber: B17
Night Bomber: Lancaster
Dive Bomber: JU87
Interceptor: Spitfire
Escort fighter: P51
Ground Attack Aircraft: Sturmovik
Post war jet fighter: F86
Post war jet bomber: B52
Piston Airliner: DC3
Jet airliner: B747
Supersonic Airliner: er…. ?
Club Hack: Cessna 152
Now the ones I’m stuck with.
Trainer is being fought out between the Stearmen, Harvards and Tiger Moths?
Helicopter (yeuuuuch) Bell 47, Jet Ranger or Huey?
Torpedo Bomber: Swordfish, Avenger or something Japanese?
Night Fighter: Mosquito or JU88?
Anyone else want to contribute. Categories or nominations equally welcomed.

Always a good idea to mention THE York.;)
Ashley,
Since you’re at Duxford, I’m a bit surprised there’s no P-47 in your list.
Best regards, Transall.

No.
That’s THE York 🙂

Moggy, you surprise me! I thought you would have interpreted the York as an icon for The Battle of Britain film. 😀

Hmm,
The York as an icon for the Berlin Airlift.
Nice one.

First time I’ve read this thread (yes, most slack of me, must try harder to keep up :p) and it has been most interesting reading.
To me, something that is iconic is a symbol of something or someone. For example, Spitfires and Hurricanes are iconic to me as a symbol of the Battle of Britain – I see a Spit or Hurri and I remember all those young men who took to the skies in defence of Britain and never returned. Therefore, my iconic aircraft are ones that I look at and think “that reminds me of such and such, or I associate that with such and such, or so and so flew such an aircraft”. Does this make sense?
So, my list of iconic aircraft:
Spitfire
Hurricane
Mosquito
Lancaster
Lysander
TSR.2
Me262
Meteor
Harrier
Concorde
Bell X1
Hunter
Vulcan
Comet
Typhoon (the spanking Hawker version, not that new noisy new-fangled thingy)
B2
York
I am sure some of you will throw your hands up in horror at some of my choices and others amongst you will be thinking “but what about such and such”, but this is MY list…the aircraft that are iconic to ME, not the aircraft I think are iconic in general 🙂

I love that noise. But you will notice most poeple only do it at airshows, and those who do it reguarrly are not being kind to the engine and kind to surrounding people in surrounding areas. You won’t find me doing it.

Well, i have more than 150hrs in a harvard, i know it’s back seat, but what can you expect from someone who has only just got her licence?????
hours in a skumnkmunk? you have to kidding me right? You couldn’t give me all the money in the world to get me into one of those things!!
Friends, I have never said I am friends with anyone here.

I’ll count them for you tonight. It was one of the first aircraft I flew – nearly 12 years ago and the one on which I did my complex rating and some of my first aerobatics and I’ve only ever flown it from the front seat.
How many hours do you have in a Chipmunk?

Funnily enough, I would slot a Yak-11 in-between the T6 and the Mustang. That is truly beautiful to fly and severely underrated, except by their owners who live with wry, smug knowing grins.
Yak 11 may fly nice, but have sh!t ground handling. Horrible on take off, stiff undercarrage and stupid 180 degree castering tailwheel.
And like a cartain BBD owner said, people say a spitfire is much nicer to fly, but then, they haven’t got a yak!
Very sleek, but i would order them T6, P-51, Yak 11.

I think it may be time to get the tin hat out :p
I would have made a comment about Yak 11’s but I thought I was on pretty dodgy ground as it was, Digby will be informing my carers to increase my medication if I carry on.
Janie, was that Spitfire flight for me? If so you missed my birthday by a month, thanks for the thought though 😀

So you are deaf then? Skunkmunks are noise and have a very irratating note, but a Harvard has a lovely deep throaty note. Maybe you should open your ears up next time.

Presumably because they were already on RAF strength, and therefore a) would not have carried an acquisition cost, and b) already had a sizeable spares inventory. And of course, they’re far far prettier than T6’s. 😀
Nothing is more elengent than a T6, T6’s P-51 and Hurricanes are the prettiest. A skunkmunk has nothing going for it, a very ugly plane indeed. Nearly as ugly as Jordan!
