Mojave Airport/Spaceport!

Hi guys,
We visited Mojave Airfield this summer whilst I was on holiday in America. We got a tour round the airfield by a guy called Bob (thanks Bob for a wonderful tour), he had only just started doing the airport tours again because of all the security hype that was going on, he had asked his boss that morning and he had given him the all clear (phew lol)
We got to see an actor’s bits and bobs that he keeps there inc a tank, some helicopters etc, can’t really remember the actor’s name! Bob also took us to see some of the old USAF Lockheed’s (I think they were Lockheed’s lol) that were there even, though he thought he would get told off for taking us there but anyway lol 😀
There was also lots of AC 767-200’s, US Airways F100’s, Ex Zip 737-200’s and ex Southwest planes which we weren’t allowed to take pics of because the airlines had said that they still carried logos etc of the airline they flew with and didn’t want us to know that they sent them here for some strange reason

Overall, there was less aircraft there than we thought there would have been, it seemed very empty. I will hopefully put some pics on later to the images forum

If anyone has any info on the current stored bits and bobs or a website that lists them, that would be much appreciated as I need to tie lots of the aircraft up that I saw!
Also, i recommed the tour to anyone as it is fascinating to see, $5 each too! Bargain!

Cheers,
Sam

I guess the airlines don’t want you taking pictures as photos of hundreds of aircraft in the desert parked reminds people of a recession or those shots after 9/11.

Yeh, the Airteamimages photo of the Stargazer L1011 (oops i just realized i put DC10 before 😮 ) it is in the same position as it is now so it has been stored there for quite a while looking at a.net!

Tartan – yes, it is the funny looking hedgehog thing lol 😀
Rutan made this http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1127890/L/ C-9 Rotary Rocket which apparently was supposed to go into space too, but the project was abandoned due to lack of cash and now resides at Mojave!

Also, while I was there the Orbital DC10 was there (N140SC)

Oh dear, oh dear!

PS: A little bit of trivia here – the [ahem! 😉 ] TriStar is named “Stargazer”, the name of Jean Luc Picard’s first command before the USS Enterprise! 🙂

Cheers Tartan, very helpful 🙂
Plus at Mojave they build and fly the aircraft that are built like the Virgin GlobalFlyer machine, can’t remember what they call them but they are funny looking aircraft! Just call them experimental aircraft lol. Also, when I was there DC9 N932ML was there, which is an electronic testbed aircraft which was actually being worked on

Sam

Maybe you are meaning the Rutan factory?? Burt Rutan built the spaceship 1 that went into space, and of course is making the virgin Global flyer. Rutan certainly makes some weird looking machines 😀
Never knew they were at Mojave.
N932ML…is’nt that the one that looks like a hedgehog with all the antennae and the funny nose??

Yeh, we got there and my dad and brother walked up to the gate and it opened lol :D, we could of walked right on to the airfield! It shut again about a minute later then Bob walked out and told us about the tour so we took it!
Bob would let us take pics of the ones that were basically scrap metal, eg the Hawaiian DC10, KLM 747-200, Gemini DC10, Delta Tristar which all had logos and the liveries still on, but in another area was the Air Canada 767’s, Southwest 737-200’s and Zip 737-200’s which the airlines allowed no pics apparently
There is alot of interesting and weird stuff inc Convair 990 (as you come in to the airport), a Roton C9 Rocket supposed to launch into space which never did. Also, while I was there the Orbital DC10 was there (N140SC)

One thing I found out is they keep the doors open on all aircraft so that the planes can breath as when the sun gets in, it makes the interior very hot and will wear it away, even though they do find all sorts inside eg birds and other creatures

Thanks
Sam

Javier (normal job – fueller) has been doing these tours round Mojave with the blessing of the airport management for years – they’ve never “stopped” even though the airport website has sort of implied tours weren’t possible, and all that was necessary was to ask politely at the airport office and sometimes wait if Javier was out fuelling an airplane. Javier has never objected to me taking pics of airplanes with titles or logos on them, so maybe this is a newbie thing with “Bob” who doesn’t know the ropes yet?
