G-MARA had an engine change the day after the incident

It’s easy to laugh at people saying, ‘I thought I was going to die’ in newspaper reports of this sort, but most people are not that knowledgeable about aviation matters and regard aircraft as something that simply takes them on holiday.
If one made a huge bang on take-off, they would hardly sit there and say, ‘Oh, don’t worry, it’s only a V2500 surging. They’re prone to it. We’ll be ok.’
Most of the passengers sounded s**t-scared to me, and I can well imagine why.

I think you have got it spot on there.. the average PAX who only gets on a plane once a year will be listening to all noises thinking “what’s that”, more so if a nervous flyer.

The fact is, the media are just reporting what “normal” people are thinking, and i bet some of them PAX thought they were going to drop out of the sky!! 😮

Even to a keen aviation follower, i bet if you was on that plane say for example in the front few roads, there would be an element of “thinking” going through your head at that moment in time when you hear a few large bangs and a sense of concern.

I would find it hard to believe that no-one would not have an element of concern.

By the way… Code Corba is that a airline code word or used throughout the business ?

Proberly at Monarchs Maintance Base or been sent back to its maker for repair!

It’s not the aircraft you need to worry about Tommy, it’s the engine and it would have been changed anyway!!!

I heard an RB211 backfire at LHR once.

It sounded like the wrath of God!

Jet2 are having the same issue with G-LSAE at the moment, been causing them the same problem on a few occasions now, just got a new engine fitted today, will put a lovely dent in their profits.

you have to love the fact that passengers think that in this modern day 1 engine failing could bring an aircraft down, when was the last time you heard of an accident cause by an engine failure on a Multi-Engine jet?

I’ve had a few surge on me when doing engine runs and it does make you jump a bit for the first few times. The funny thing is just before the engine surges it’s noise and vibration changes. It sort of “Grumbles” so you know you are just about to surge. Usualy this point is just befor the EPR or RPM figure you need to reach to declare the engine serviceable!!!
I would be easing the throttles forward gently to reach a figure so I can feel the changes. Aircrew don’t do that so they won’t get to feel the subtle changes.

V2500 are quite susceptable to engine surges with a crosswind at take-off power. Gives you quite a fright! 😮

i started work at 7pm at a pub right under the take off from BHX (in catherine-de-barnes) and by the mentioned rugby gound, i was outside before my shift and heard the said bang/bangs. but i couldn’t tell whether it was from the road or from the air, sounded like a car misfiring, quite loud too.

Why did I know there was going to be a “we all thought we were going to die” comment somewhere in that report?
