Montreal Mirabel

On Sunday night this airport closes to passengers. Cargo flights will continue. Recently the airport has only be used for passenger charter flights, including the Air Transat weekly summer service from Gatwick. All passenger flights will transfer to Trudeau (Dorval).

Personally I would have kept the passenger side open as a low fare/charter terminal

The airport is also home to a Bombardier plant. I think the international scheduled airlines were allowed to move to Dorval in 1997

its between 50 and 60 miles outside montreal and the government wouldnt build a train link to it so all the international airlines refused to fly there as the commute for passengers to montreal was an hour or more.

Being in the cargo buisness myself what type of operations operate through – i would imagine quite a large scale operation really being located close one of the largest cities in the country – Postal, Fedex, UPS, DHL et al, or do most of these operate out of Dorval?

Flew into Mirabel on a Wardair A310 a few years ago now (cough cough) – even then it was still very under utilised

[QUOTE=EGNM]Its a shame that not many forum members on here are familiar with more than the typical UK airports – however much most of us contribute i would like to see much more conversation heading away from the typical EDI/GLA/MAN/LBA/LPL/STN/BHX/EMA hotbed.

I agree with you, but with the majority of forum members being in GB and Europe and just a handfull in the Southern Hemisphere, you’d have to expect the topics to be centered around these Countries

Sorry for not given the details guys. From what I know, Mirabel was built by the Canadian government to provide for future expansion in the Montreal area. It was built essentially miles (or Kilometers) from the city in what most see as a forest. It was built like many airports with a utopian image (like Brasil’s capitol airport or to some extent Dulles) and was designed to have room for expansion. This expansion room was never used. In the beginning people were excited about it and it was busy but in the end only Air Transat and a few other small airlines and cargo carriers used it. It is simply not as close and as useful as the more centrally located Dorval, AC’s headquarters. So now I guess it will only be used for cargo until demand spurs the need for its use as a passenger airport aswell.

Personally I would have kept the passenger side open as a low fare/charter terminal

Perhaps it will indeed be reinstated as a loco base? Sounds like it’s a prime candidate for a Ryanair style operation.

Perhaps either of you could enlighten us a bit more about the history behind these fields?

Although I like the idea of a two airport operation, I believe that Mirabel was simply not practical and a misuse of money. Now with impovments being made to Dorval it is alot more atractrive to any airline operating to Montreal.
