I haven’t got this issue of AFM yet so don’t know if it has been reported or even if it is true. I have read that the RAF future transport requirements include the outright purchase of the 4 leased C17s already in service and the full purchase of a further 7 aircraft. Does anybody know anymore?
Further to the transport requirement the RAF is to purchase 25 Airbus A400M lifters to replace its older Hercules C1s and C3s (C130K and C130K-30)s. The heavy lift fleet will then look something like this:
11 Globmaster C1s (C17)
10 Hercules C4 (C130J-30)
15 Hercules C5 (C130J)
25 Airbus A400M.
Bit of a mixed bag it seems considering the government wants to rationalise its fleet management. Just how good is the A400M compared to the C130J-30?
