Also from this week’s AW&ST- a few summary points.
– As mentioned in the previous JDW article, the USAF realized that they will have to keep the Warthog in service possibly as late as 2028.
– Instead of retiring aircraft to free up funds for the A-10 modernization program, they will hold off on some A-10 maintenance until the upgrades have been completed.
– The envisioned upgrades include the current Precision Engagement package and the Precision Engagement Plus (“Platinum Pig”, “Super Hog”, “Silver Sow”) package.
– PE: HOTAS and integrated targeting pods to eventually use the LM Sniper Pod. Should be able to deliver JDAMs and SDBs- avionics upgrade includes 2 color MFDs, digital stores system, and uprated power supply. Upgrades expected to finish by 2009.
– PE+: Upgrade TF34-100A with new fan and other components to enable the A-10 to carry +5,000lbs of payload, and an increase of +5,000 ft in ceiling altitude. Expected to finish DEVELOPMENT around 2008.
– Other upgrades might include a TADIRCM pod, Comet pod, more targeting pods, or Joint Tactical Radio System.
