BUDGET airline Flybe today revealed plans to buy up to 26 new jets worth £523m, boosting its Liverpool John Lennon airport operations.
The 118-seat Brazilian-built Embraer 195 aircraft deal will expand Flybe’s fleet from 39 to 64 by 2009.
The deal will give it the young-est fleet anywhere in the world, said marketing director Mike Rutter.
Exeter-based Flybe, Europe’s third biggest no-frills operator, links Liverpool with domestic destinations such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast, which will generate about 500,000 passengers through Liverpool.
Mr Rutter said the new Embraer fleet will allow the airline to operate international routes from Liverpool, requiring up to five planes to be based here.
“The domestic routes will be served by the turbo props and the jets will link Liverpool to France, Portugal, Spain and the Mediterranean.
“We will announce the new routes early in 2006 and they will start in August or September, when the first planes are delivered.
“That will allow us to double passengers through Liverpool to one million, which will create 1,000 local jobs.”
He added: “This not only shows the health of low cost aviation, but the regional end of low-cost aviation.”
Flybe chairman and managing director Jim French said: “Flybe has become a major player in European aviation and this deal will pave the way for the company’s continued growth and financial success.”
The Embraer 195 first flew in November 2004 and is the largest aircraft in the company’s 170/ 195 family.
It is a narrow-bodied large aircraft, ideally suited to routes of up to 2,000 nautical miles and the deal comes hot on the heels of Flybe’s 2004 announcement of the £552m purchase of up to 61 Embraer Q400s.
Looks like yet another low cost carrier is to base aircraft at Liverpool!

There are restrictions on Flybe operating to CDG/on their former Air France franchisee routes from when they terminated their AF franchise deal. Do t know the exact details though

Quote from EGNM:
“Mootings here in CDG were that the service was doing so well it was shortly to go to 3x daily. Kinda contradicts the above?”
Didnt think Flybe had the slots to do that? Thought we only could do 2x daily due to Flybe pulling out of operating on Air France’s behalf from LHR?
The main bulk of traffic is South west folk going out for a few days and then coming back. There is very little in the way of passengers originating from CDG. This surely cant be good for any route, especially to/from a main European Hub. Flybe are apparantly having a big advertising campaign in Paris to attract the French this way, but are struggling to promote Exeter as a tourist destination in its own right. Its a lovely place, but the French seem to prefer Plymouth because of its harbour! (According to the local press)

Tell me about it – I think that we will see more flights to Chambery, Geneva, Toulouse, Salzburg/Innsbruck and basically mirror what Southampton offer. Yippee!!!

Im sure it will do alot better than the new CDG service, which during the week, is struggling to fill a Dash 8-400.

Has anyone any ideas how Flybes’ BHD/ABZ is doing against Easterns’ BFS/ABZ – Eastern recently reviewed their fare structure so presumably Flybes’ presence was concerning them.

Sounds right for where they are going to be based, 9 new routes from Exeter? Wow, that is serious expansion!
By: james_simmonds - 9th June 2005 at 12:13
I managed to read the “Your Flybe” staff news letter the other day, and they say that the 195’s are heading to Southampton, Belfast, Birmingham and will replace the damp leased 737’s and ageing 146’s.
This also means Exeter will see atleast one for the “Bucket and Spade” flights to the Med. This also come with news of atleast another 9 routes from Exeter alone, with the possiblity of a new service to AMS. Im sure it will do alot better than the new CDG service, which during the week, is struggling to fill a Dash 8-400.
As a member of Ground Crew that will have to park, load and service these planes, I’d like to know where they are going to park them all! We are somewhat over-stretched already! And the holds of the 195 are going to be a nightmare to load for the AGP/ALC runs – it looks mighty small!

Im not really sure how it would do. I flew that route back in 2003 and it seemed quite full. Probably would do quite well if they had cheaper flights than Eastern. I for one would use it, as I come back to Leeds quite often.
Cheers for the reply mate 🙂
I think ABZ-LBA from FlyBe would do well, apparantly the loads on LBA-SOU (Competing with Eastern), are absolutely cracking, just like the new LBA-BRS-NQY service.
I hope Flybe do actually do the promised expansion from the about 10 airports they have promised it!

flybe.’s low cost fares could easily operate on the same routes as Eastern’s outrageous fares. It won’t just be the same amount of passengers now being spread over two airlines. If a low cost operator enters into a new market, it will create demand because it’s cheap and because of active marketing. Do you think all the routes that Ryanair now operate from everywhere to everwhere else were crying out for these services before Ryanair got them going? I for one have travelled on dozens of Ryanair/easyJet/flybe./Monarch Scheduled flights to places I would simply just not have gone to had the fare been out of my reach. I think most people on this forum have flown somewhere at some point, just because they can afford to do so. Of course, there will also be the cost-concious regular traveller who will also choose the cheaper alternative as a matter of course, if given a choice.
flybe. would be a very smart airline, in my opinion, to go head to head with Eastern (and other airlines) on the thicker domestic routes e.g ABZ/NCL, ABZ/NWI and ABZ/MME as well as other non-Eastern routes such as ABZ/LSI (sorry for the concentration on ABZ). There are still so many more domestic routes that flybe. can pick up. They just need the help of the airports to keep the operating costs down until the route can support itself. If their aircraft are good on fuel burn on the shorter sectors, then they could have an even more solid domestic route network. The shocking rail network in this country and shocking prices to match won’t be much of a threat neither.
I didn’t used to think much of flybe., but they have won me over now.

How do you think Aberdeen would do from LBA? Alright, we already have it served by Eastern, but so was Southampton, and FlyBe started flights there.

Thats been going for months mate, I really cant see them moving into HUY, sorry!
By: Humberside - 7th June 2005 at 19:36
Well FlyBe are rumoured to be moving into DSA, I think thats most likely, along with further expansion at LBA.
A rumour on pprune, and one I believe indicates Flybe are presently deciding between DSA and HUY

Seems that ABZ might also be getting new routes served to FlyBE rumoured to be Birmingham and Southampton. A third is thought to be Newcastle. I don’t know what it’ll be like though, as Southampton and Newcastle are already served by Eastern Airways and Birmingham by BA.

Flybe have indicated that they want to expand at BHD but this will depend on the outcome of the current planning review – international routes like Brussels were mentioned in the past
Unfortunately, the absurd passenger cap is causing major problems and seems to be in place to placate a few NIMBYs and another competitor not a million miles away (I’m sure you’ll know who I mean!)
By: paulc - 7th June 2005 at 14:37
Be great to see the Emb195 at Eastleigh – might get some of the nimby’s to shut up.

Scotland’s turn now. 😉

Its reletively close to Doncaster, Leeds Bradford, Manchester
Grand thanks for that 🙂 i guess with it being ‘close’ to MAN and LBA this is going to further reduce any chance of any BE services to HUY.
